May does not look much better than April for new book releases and would be a dreary month without the independent presses to provide some great reads. DarkFuse and ChiZine Publications (and the launch of its new Undertow Publishing imprint) deliver enough punch to get us avid readers through May and to the beginning of June when we will finally see the arrival of Stephen King's new novel.
If you only have time to read one book this month, make it "Rogue" by Greg F. Gifune. I have been a fan of Gifune's works for a long time and this could be his best novel yet.
'Rogue' by Greg F. Gifune
Greg F. Gifune has been a favorite of mine for a long time and even I was surprised at how good "Rogue" is when I first read it. "Rogue" is, quite simply, one of the best horror novels I have read in years.
'Ash and Bone' by Lisa Von Biela
"Ash and Bone" by Lisa Von Biela is a redefining of the ghost story and a must read for fans of the supernatural and horror genres.
'Deadlock' by Tim Curran
"Deadlock" by Tim Curran is another haunted novella from Darkfuse this month but nothing in this story is as it seems. From the setting, a haunted boat, to the unfolding terror, "Deadlock" is full or shocks and surprised right up to the very end.
'Reaping the Dark' by Gary McMahon
No one notices the driver as long as he is there when he is needed. "Reaping the Dark" by Gary McMahon teaches us that something does notice the driver and leaves the reader almost afraid to get behind the wheel again.
'Haxan' by Kenneth Mark Hoover
"Haxan" by Kenneth Mark Hoover is the story of a man who is destined to forever battle in the war between good and evil as battle rages anew in the town of Haxan in the New Mexico Territory of 1874.
'Shadows and Tall Trees' edited by Michael Kelly
This anthology, featuring authors such as Robert Shearman and Steve Rasnic Tem, is the first book from Undertow Publications, and imprint of ChiZine Publications.
