Man candy movies to look forward to in 2013

Depending on who you ask, casual viewers or the anti-Abrams contingent of hardcore Trekkies, “Star Trek Into Darkness” may be the most anticipated blockbuster of the summer, or the most dreaded. Either way, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will once again be strutting their stuff as Captain Kirk and Dr. Spock, respectively.Plus, Benedict Cumberbatch is involved, and that is simply the coolest name of all time.  For the uninitiated, Cumberbatch also plays Sherlock Holmes in the wildly popular British series “Sherlock”.“Star Trek Into Darkness” blasts into theaters on May 17.“The Wolf of Wall Street” does not yet have an official release date, but it boasts direction by the legendary Martin Scorsese and a fantastic supporting cast. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey star in this crime drama about a New York stockbroker (DiCaprio) who refuses to cooperate in a massive securities fraud case. The case involved mob infiltration and corruption on Wall Street. If there is one thing Hollywood has no shortage of, it’s beautiful people. In fact, it’s fair to say that Hollywood’s cup runneth over with lookers. Happily, this confluence of attractive people means that sooner or later there is a good chance these dreamboats will be sharing screentime.

We all have that one actor (okay, some of us have those actors) we will watch in absolutely anything. Who cares if it’s good? The second things go downhill you can hop a one-way train to daydreamland wherein the object of your desire simultaneously compliments you with the smoothness of Shakespeare and cooks a feast made up of all your favorite foods--said feast is calorie-free of course.

In an effort to whet the appetites of moviegoers everywhere, we dug around to find some of the hunkiest lineups the coming year has to offer. All that’s left to do is mark those calendars and book some face time with some of these worthy fellas.

  • We won’t get to see Thor back in action until Nov. 8, but the sequel promises more hammer action from Chris Hemsworth, and certainly some additional evil-brilliance from Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
  • Robert Downey Jr. is set to grace the screen once again as the ingeniously characterized, “Genius. Billionaire. Playboy. Philanthropist.”, Tony Stark. While  Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle are sure to turn in charming performances, it’s going to be very challenging for Robert Downey Jr. not to hog the sexiness spotlight as the titular hero."Iron Man 3" will kick off the summer movie season on May 3.
  • “The Hunger Games” trilogy, like most everything else she’s in, is Jennifer Lawrence’s world, the other characters just live there, but my does Katniss have some adorable company in all of those incredibly unpleasant situations she’s forced into. Peeta, the sweet and sensitive baker, and Gale, the wild and rebellious hunter, return in the sequel, and now have the added competition of another hunger games victor, Finnick, a tanned and muscle-bound beauty, or so Collins tells it in the book.The world we be watching...again on Nov. 22.
  • Of all the titles here discussed, “Side Effects” is the closest to release; it’s set to hit theaters on Feb. 8. For reasons unfathomed by this author, People magazine and a lot of women across the country find Channing Tatum attractive. If that’s you, know that Tatum is the incredibly talented Rooney Mara’s love interest in this thriller.For those of you that don’t see the appeal, and therefore agree with this take on the Sexiest Man Alive choice, take solace in the fact that the always charming Jude Law is also in this picture. Remember in “The Holiday” when Jude Law was there? And he was adorable and vulnerable and charming the entire time? So does this girl. Take note, Mr. Tatum, this is how you do sexy. This is not.
  • Much remains as yet unknown about “Winter’s Tale” including the release date and many plot details. Described only as “A fantasy story set in 19th Century and present-day Manhattan [that] revolves around a thief, a dying girl and a flying white horse”, “Winter’s Tale” is something of an enigma.The one thing we do know for sure is that it has a stellar cast. Alongside the always foxy likes of Will Smith and Colin Farrell we’ll see Jennifer Connelly, Jessica Brown Findlay of “Downton Abbey”, William Hurt, Russell Crowe and Matt Bomer. Bomer and Crowe up the man candy ante as well.
  • Robert Rodriguez’ long-promised, oft-delayed sequel to 2005’s “Sin City” is finally, finally happening. Though the sequel will be without the services of Clive Owen--Josh Brolin is taking over his role for plot reasons already understood by fans and potentially too geeky for casual viewers to care about--but it is not lacking for star power.In addition to Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Josh Brolin, the cast boasts Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Eva Green, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Jeremy Piven and Ray Liotta--to name a few.  The noir-laced graphic novel adaptation is slated for release on Oct. 4.
  • Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise will fly into theaters on June 14. The sometimes bespecticaled superhero/journalist will be played by Henry Cavill, who honed his smoldering look on “The Tudors”.Amy Adams will be Lois Lane, while Russell Crowe (wow he’s been busy) is set to fill the shoes of Superman’s biological father. Michael Shannon, a man who does wonders with wicked characters, will appear as General Zod. Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and Laurence Fishburne will co-star as well.
  • “Hands of Stone” portrays the relationship between the legendary boxer-trainer team of Roberto Duran and Ray Arcel.  The always gorgeous and talented Gael Garcia Bernal will take the lead as Roberto Duran, while Robert De Niro is set to play trainer Ray Arcel.Ryan Kwanten of “True Blood” will appear in the film, as well as musical star Usher. Usher will be taking on the role of Sugar Ray Leonard. A release date is not yet announced for “Hands of Stone”.
  • We won’t get to feast our eyes on “Prisoners” until Sept. 20, but when we do, we’ll see the story of  a Boston man who kidnaps the person he believes is responsible for the disappearance of his daughter and her best friend. No offense to Liam Nesson, but the presence of Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman has us much more excited about this than any of the “Taken” sequels to come.Viola Davis, Paul Dano, Terrence Howard, Maria Bello and Melissa Leo round out a strong supporting cast.  As seen in the photograph, Jackman will also be reprising his role as Wolverine this year.
  • In typical Terrence Malick fashion, the auteur’s next project is as yet untitled, even though it is in post-production. Also in traditional Malick style, the project has attracted a plethora of star power. In addition to Gosling, Bale and Fassbender, audiences will see Natalie Portman, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer, Holly Hunter and even Florence Welch.The untitled project also lacks a solid release date. Not that it really matters since plot is more an idea in Malick films than a thing, the story is said to be that of “Two intersecting love triangles. Obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.”
  • It’s hard to tell if “R.I.P.D.” is meant to be an action flick or a comedy. Viewers will know for sure when it hits theaters on July 19. Until then we’ll have to rely on the below, shall we say, potentially disastrous plot description to get a sense of what Kevin Bacon and Ryan Reynolds are going to get up to.“A recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him.”
  • Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington, two of the biggest names in action-crime-drama hybrids are joining forces in the appropriately titled, “2 Guns”. The pair will be a DEA agent and Naval Intelligence officer set up to investigate each other by the mob. Safe money says that all hell is going to break loose on that mob the second those two catch on.
  • George Clooney, Matt Damon and Daniel Craig are teaming up to rescue precious works of art stolen by Nazis before Hitler can destroy them. So basically, Batman, Jason Bourne and James Bond are going to fight the good fight and save art together. Best. Idea. Ever.George Clooney wrote the script and is also directing the film, so it promises to have extremely high production value. Oh, and it’s a true story. “The Monuments Men” is basically already a Best Picture contender...for 2014. Yes, the only problem here is that we have to wait until Dec. 18 to see all that a**kickery and charm united on one screen.
