You could see a medicine woman, an eagle, and what else(?), and take the memories home to your friends and family.  You never know when a face might suddenly wink or smile at you from a pile of rock. According to Wikipedia:  "Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. The rough floor and jagged walls of the park contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes more than 150 million years old. Just north of Las Vegas is Utah's Zion National Park,  boasting some of the most awe inspiring landscapes you may ever see.  To the south Grand Canyon opens wide to astound adventure seekers. To the west Red Rock Canyon with its wonderful colored cliffs takes you to a time before time, and to the east The Valley of Fire shows off some of the most unusual rock formations in the world. A colorful canyon is a great place to hike, shoot pictures, paint, and be amazed.

When you come to Las Vegas you don’ have to drink, gamble, or go to girly shows, if that is not your bent. One of the greats things about Las Vegas and the Southern Nevada area is its broad range of free or low cost adventures. It’s so user friendly you can create your own event every day. Leaving the heavily forested mountains and valleys of home state Wanda Fay came to Las Vegas for the first time recently to investigate the desert,. She not only found new worlds she couldn't find in her eastern state, but with her art she made many of her finds great events for others as well.

She came to Vegas, visited “The Strip” and Fremont Street, briefly played the games and ate at the famous buffets, then she took her imagination to Hoover Dam, Red Rock, The Valley of Fire, and Utah’s Zion National Park.

From crawling through caves and cervices, studying petroglyphs and native markings, and thoroughly ingesting all the information she could from park information centers she was able to create a portfolio of art work that speaks to herself and to others about her visit.

  • According to the petroglifs there was abundance all around them, on the high slopes and cliffs and on the desert floor. The family depended on this to always be true.  
  • Life was a dangerous adventure,  so evening was  story time, and the best time of the day, when father and grandfather told of their days hunting and bringing home provision and tall tales. 
  • A good artist always tries to get the feel of her subject matter even if it means risking getting trapped between a rock and a hard place. 
  • Wanda Fay Owens Schneider is a life long resident of Laurel Maryland, her father a life-long fireman. She is a seasoned "caver" and mountain topper, with a big love for new adventures. She began her art career at a young age by grabbing a bright red bingo dauber and scribbling all over the walls of the house.  When this was not too well received she ducked into a closet and those walls became her canvass. Painting and drawing has been her passion ever since. Wanda Fay graduated from Slippery Rock College in 1976. Since that time she has taught grades K-6 and she favors teaching Special Ed kids. She is married with 3 sons and has illustrated several books and websites. Currently she is illustrating "Meo's Blog" and "3 Acre Beach"  on Facebook.
