Macross / Robotech Chibi Action Figures

Anime fans in the Western world owe a lot to shows like Robotech and Voltron. Both were Western Cartoons, for lack of a better description, that were cobbled together from early animes and made into new stories. While, with 20/20 hindsight, Voltron is nearly unwatchable, Robotech has fared up somewhat better to the ravages of time. It was even successful enough to spawn actual sequels which went along (to a lesser or greater degree) with the story of the 'cobbled together version.

After the success of early 'remake' style anime, more and more shows started making the transition to English viewership, and while the practice of reusing animation is largely a thing of the past, it did lay the groundwork for how anime is thought of here. Toys and collectibles from the series, needless to say, remain fairly common. Such is the case with these rather interesting Chibi versions of several of the mecha. I think these are from later series, as I don't recognize the human models, though I think the green one is the type of Armor that Miriya used at one point (or a derivative).

The Green Mecha

This one is a bit of a mystery to me, I admit not being totally up to date on my mecha here. I don't recognize it. Still, it's pretty neat, though it's a shame that a good bit of the pvc-like material it is sculpted from got bent in transit.

The rear view. The damage sustained in shipping is a little more apparent here. You can see that the jets on the back are squished together. They are supposed to be further apart and (mostly) parallel.

This one looks enough like a VF-1 Valkyrie that I just tempted to call it such. There are some differences, but it is likely a successor model from the same later series as the green model. I half wish 'U.N. Spacy' was stenciled on the gun barrel.

This one held up quite a bit better than the green mech, as it had fewer 'free-floating' pieces to squish. Only the laser barrels on the head show any sign of deformity.

The Battle Armor

This is the one that I suspect is the Zentraedi suit that Miriya used. I could probably just do a little Wiki fu and make sure, but it almost makes these little models less fun to know for sure.

from the back, this guy was largely unscathed by shipping. Really, only the shoulder mounted cannon sustained any warping. It's hard to see, but this little guy actually has some articulation, as the arms have cut joins and the cannon swivels. I think this one is my favorite of the trio!
