Today's Tip – Which breeds are most likely to go missing?
You will sometimes hear someone say that a certain breed of dog is a “runner”. What exactly does that mean? Most times, they are talking about the likelihood of the dog running away whenever the opportunity presents itself; whether that be in the form of an open gate, a door held open a little too long, an open car window, or a slipped collar or leash. Dogs were bred for different jobs, so there are some breeds that are a little more likely to run off, but that's because humans have bred them to accentuate certain attributes. Beagles are a good example. They were bred as hunting dogs, and are revered for their excellent sense of smell. Unfortunately, the very thing that we bred them for is the thing that increases their likelihood of running off when given the opportunity. A beagle will pick up a scent and quickly forget about everything else around while following it. Lost & Found Ohio Pets reports that a considerable percentage of the animals that are posted via their service are beagles. The top ten breeds seen most often on their page are :
The data suggests that the popularity of Labradors, German Shepherds and Pit Bulls may be more responsible for the quantity of displaced pets of those breeds rather than any breed specific trait.
However, when it comes to the call of nature, no breed is more likely than another to become lost while in search of a mate. Remember to spay and neuter your pets, to make them less likely to roam.
If you have lost your pet or found a stray animal, please contact the Cleveland Pets Examiner or Lost & Found Ohio Pets with all of the information. The more information the better!
