Today's Tip – Most dogs can't find their way home
We've all heard that dogs have such an extraordinary sense of smell that they can find their way home, but recent studies show that is just not true. The lost dog who finds its way home might just be a lucky one. As remarkable as our canine friends are in other ways, their navigational abilities are lacking.
Harry and Martha Frank, from the University of Michigan tested dogs for how well they did when presented with simple detours. Coming up against a barrier posed a problem that most dogs couldn't solve. Dogs are not good at figuring out that they can round a fence or other barrier, and are not good at remembering where they have been.
Don't rely on your lost dog finding his way home – be proactive about finding him.
The Cleveland Pets Examiner runs a Lost & Found Friday column each week. Check the list every Friday here in the Cleveland Pets column and share it with others who you think may be able to help or network the information.
