Have you visited the Lindy & Company pet bakery and retail shop at 823 Wayne Avenue? This author thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the home of the locally-made gourmet pet treats on a recent Saturday morning.
Lindy & Company was created to help homeless youth at Daybreak gain work experience so they may secure and maintain employment and become self-sufficient. Employment is the key to breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty, and Daybreak and Lindy & Company have created a program whereby Daybreak residents can gain the soft skills and work experience employers seek.
Under staff supervision, youth living at Daybreak bake the treats, package the items, sell them at the Wayne Ave shop or the Oakwood farm market and/or ship or deliver them to the customer’s door. These young people learn how to run a bakery and retail store, learn how to fill orders, design gift baskets, review finances, and learn work ethics and job etiquette. During my Saturday visit, I could watch the pet treats being hand-made; get answers to any questions as well as helpful suggestions. For example, my cat is older than time and has Feline Oral Resorptive Disease – she cannot manage the crunchy cat treats, and I did not think of moistening them. As per the helpful suggestion by a Lindy & Co staffer, I soaked the treats in a little warm vegetable broth and Rosie happily devoured them (as seen in the photo)!
In addition to a full selection of their available treats, the retail store also has collars, leashes, Thunder Shirts, pet bowls and other accessories. Some of the lovely pet items at Lindy’s also benefit other homeless people and pets in the community: every beautiful, large pet bed purchased at Lindy’s as part of Project Warmth also provides a pet bed for the homeless pets at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Every Lindy’s quilt sold through Project Warmth provides a quilt for Daybreak residents. Lindy’s also carries some vibrantly colored water bottles, lunch bags, tumblers and totes – the purchase of any one of these helps support the Animal Rescue Site in providing food and care for rescued dogs and cats.
