Fans of la maquina cementera are experiencing joy as Cruz Azul ends week 8 of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX on top of the league table. Club America continues on a downward spiral, Chivas stumbles again, and Club Tijuana ends their dominance at the Caliente Stadium, all this and more in this week’s La Liga MX wrap…
Cruz Azul dominates
Cruz Azul defeated Queretaro FC 3-1 at La Corregidora Stadium extending their undefeated streak to eight games this season. La maquina turned the game around after trailing in the first minutes of play. Once the Azulinos got rolling, they completely dominated the Gallos Blancos showing their rivals why they are at the top of La Liga MX.
The 'Fortress' falls in Tijuana
It had not happened since Apr. 20, 2013. Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente had not lost a home game in any competition, La Liga MX, CONCACAF Champions League, and Copa Libertadores. However, it took a struggling Chiapas FC with “aging” players to bring down the walls of the mighty Caliente Stadium. Carlos Ochoa began the scoring in the 9th minute to give the Jaguares a 3-0 victory, the worst home loss the Aztec dogs have suffered since reaching top flight football.
Pumas roar at the Azteca
Pumas UNAM are on their way to turning their season around winning their fourth game in La Liga MX and ending week 8 in the 3rd position on the league table. Saturday, the universitarios defeated Club America 3-1 at the mythical Azteca Stadium. Daniel Ludueña scored a brace for his team while America’s Francisco “Maza” Rodriguez got himself sent-off for kneeing a player. Pumas continue to rise in La Liga MX.
Pachuca unleashes goals on Morelia
The Tuzos did a number on Monarcas Morelia on Saturday destroying the monarchy 3-0 at the Hidalgo Stadium. The victory moved Enrique Meza’s team into the 4th position on the table. Meza begins to make Mexico’s oldest football team operate the way it did a few years ago, when they won just about every competition in the western hemisphere.
Champ starting to roll
The champ woke up from their Liga MX slumber! After a pair of good games in Copa Libertadores, Leon FC defeated Club Santos Laguna 4-2 at the Nou Camp. Carlos “Gulit” Peña scored for the panzas verdes, and Oribe Peralta broke the net for the Mexican hoops. Why is this important? Both are part of Miguel “Piojo” Herrera’s Mexican national team and could be traveling to Brazil this summer. Leon took a 4-0 lead before Santos, who is also playing Copa Libertadores, scored their pair. Unfortunately, Pedro Caixinha’s team ran out of time.
Happy birthday Tuca!
Tigres UANL finally won a game in La Liga MX. The felinos were the only remaining team without a win in league play. It came at a good date, Coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti’s 60th birthday. Jesus Dueñas scored the birthday goal for Tuca. The result was a 1-0 over Veracruz FC at the Universitario Stadium in Monterrey.
New coach, back to winning
With Carlos Barra at the helm, CF Monterrey returned to the winner’s circle. The Rayados had a 21st minute goal from Lucas Silva to defeat Atlas FC at the Jalisco Stadium. The loss keeps Atlas in danger for relegation, even more since Atlante FC managed to earn a draw on Sunday.
Too much heat for Chivas at Toluca's Inferno
Toluca FC hosted Chivas de Guadalajara at the Nemesio Diez Stadium to begin Sunday’s action. The game was tight as two top 5 teams faced-off in La Bombonera. But Isaac Brizuela beat Chivas goalkeeper Jose Rodriguez in the 89th minute to give the chorizeros the 1-0. Brizuela is a player that is under Miguel “Piojo” Herrera’s radar for the upcoming Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup. He had great game against South Korea in a friendly last month.
Beasley and Puebla survive in Cancun
Atlante FC wasted a great opportunity to close the gap in their fight to stave-off relegation. Both Veracruz and Atlas lost this week, which meant that the Potros de Hierro could have moved within 3 points of Atlas in direct challenge with nine games left in the season. Atlante was only able to muster a 0-0 against Puebla FC at the Andres Quintana Roo Stadium in the final game of the week.
