In “Best Man Down,” Scott (Justin Long) and Kristin (Jess Weixler) get married in Phoenix. The wedding is fun until their best man, Lumpy (Tyler Labine) gets dead drunk. Lumpy is so smashed he leaves the wedding, falls down, cracks his head, then stumbles around trying to get help until finally he lands face first in a cactus and is discovered dead the next day.
Scott must do right by his old friend so he has to cancel the honeymoon to give Lumpy a proper funeral. Kristin is not liking this at all, which is understandable, but also makes her easy to dislike. Kristin also has a pill-popping problem (that inexplicably disappears later). Shelley Long is fun to watch as Gail, Kristin’s snobby mom.
In trying to arrange a service for his friend, Scott is surprised when he realizes how little he knows about his friend, Lumpy. As things unfold we meet Ramsey (Addison Timlin), a 15-year-old girl who seems to be Lumpy's only other friend.
Ramsey and Lumpy become the most interesting focus of the movie. Ramsey lives with a drug addicted, neglectful mother named Jaime (Frances O'Connor), and Jaime’s creepy boyfriend Winston (Evan Jones).
The movie, which seemed like a comedy at first, is a drama, and a sad one. The acting is excellent and the story, although uneven, is intriguing. Spitfire Timlin gives a rock-the-house performance. It will be exciting to watch her rise up the Hollywood ladder.
“Best Man Down” is rated PG-13 and 89 minutes.
