Johnstown area snow sports report: ski resorts for March 8, 2013

Mystic Mountain at Nemacolin Woodlands last updated their snow conditions on Saturday, March 2.   At that time they were reporting all trails open.  Call the resort for information on current conditions at 866-344-6957.Hidden Valley is currently reporting mostly cloudy conditions at the resort.  They have had an inch of natural snow over the past 24 hours.  They currently 100% open with 30 runs open for skiing and 3 terrain parks with 16 features.  They are reporting a base of 22 to 42 inches.  Currently they are reporting packed powder conditions on the slopes. The Outback Snow Tubing Park will be opening at 6:00 p.m.  Hidden Valley is located about 50 minutes southwest of Johnstown.Blue Knob is currently reporting cloudy skies at the resort.  They are reporting about 2 inches of snow over the past 24 hours.  They are reporting to be 100% open with 34 trails open along with the Playground Terrain Park and Stembogan Bowl.  Snow making operations are on hold at Blue Knob.  They are reporting a base of 30 to 52 inches with groomed packed powder conditions.  The snow-tubing park will be opening for the weekend beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.  The Nordic Ski Center is also open this weekend.  Blue Knob is located about 45 minutes east of Johnstown.View the list »
This should be a great weekend to hit the slopes at Blue Knob or any of the other Johnstown area ski resorts. The mid-week storm has left a blanket of about a foot of new snow at most of the local resorts.

March is marching on and spring is fast approaching. It will not be long before the white snow covered slopes of our ski resorts change to green grass covered golf courses. However, don’t give up yet as there are still some good ski days left. With a mid-week snowstorm this past week many of our area slopes are in the best condition of the season. Most of the local resorts finally have 100% of the slopes open. So head out for some fun this weekend.

The forecast for the Johnstown area for this weekend is almost spring-like. The snowy weather of the past week should give way to warmer temperatures and sunny skies. High temperatures today are expected to be in the upper 30’s with the high on Saturday around 50 and in the upper 50’s for Sunday. Overnight lows are expected to be in the low 20’s tonight and into the upper 20’s Saturday night and only into the upper 30’s on Sunday night. Skies are expected to be mostly cloudy to cloudy today with some snow flurries in the area through 4:00 p.m. Skies should be sunny on Saturday and Sunday with some clouds moving in late on the day on Sunday ahead of rain on Monday. The mid-week storm left about a foot of fresh snow in the southern resorts including those to the east such as Whitetail Resort.

Blue Knob is celebrating a successful ski season with March Madness. During the month of March, you can take advantage of some great deals. Hidden Valley is celebrating a great season this weekend with its Spring Carnival on March 9 and 10. The Spring Carnival is great fun for the entire family. There are some great family friendly activities, games and crafts throughout the weekend. On Saturday, take part in the Ducky Race, the Cupcake Walk, or try your hand at the obstacle course. On Sunday, take part in the Limbo and Hula Hopp Competition or try your skills with the Snow Golf closest to the pin competition. On both Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy Snow Rafting at the bottom of Thunderbird. Don’t forget to enjoy the Torchlight Parade on Saturday night on Cobra. The Hidden Valley Race Club Open Giant Slalom takes place on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. You can register for the event outside the locker room. The cost is $5 plus you must have a lift ticket for the day. On Saturday night, look for the Saturday Night Jib Jam at the Tow Park. Registration is $15 and can be done anytime during the day up until 5:20 p.m. Practice is from 4:30 until 5:30 p.m. and the competition starts at 6:00 p.m.

Mystic Mountain at Nemacolin Woodlands will be open for their season finale this weekend. They are offering a special to thank customers for a very successful season. During the weekend, lift tickets will be $15 and rentals will be $10. They will be open 2:00 until 10:00 p.m. today, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Enjoy the last weekend for the season at Mystic Mountain.

Seven Springs continues it month long Spring Break Celebration this weekend with College Weekend. This weekend the resort is encouraging skiers to show their pride by wearing their college clothing during the weekend. Also making an appearance at the resort this weekend is the Acrobag Progression Tour. Come out to the Spot and enjoy demonstrations and take a turn yourself with the Acrobag. The cost is $5 per jump or $35 for unlimited jumps for the day. The Acrobag will be in operation from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Tussey Mountain in Boalsburg is holding their own March Madness this weekend. Come out to the resort and enjoy $25 lift tickets on Saturday and Sunday.

Whitetail near Mercersburg has another great competition this weekend. Tonight will be the Slacker Clothing Company Ollie Contest. Registration takes place from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. with the competition starting at 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, the resort is holding the Mogul Competition. Registration for the event is takes place from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. with the competition starting at 11:00 a.m. Both competitions are free, but donations will be accepted for the United Way of Franklin County during both competitions.

Wisp Resort has a special offer during the month of March for military personnel. Military personnel with proper ID can receive 25% off lift tickets, rentals, lessons, tubing, skating and the mountain coaster. This offer is good for the entire month of March.

So get out and enjoy the slopes this weekend before the season is gone. While at the resorts, don’t forget to take advantage of pre-season sales on 2013-2014 season passes at the lowest prices of the year.   • Seven Springs is currently reporting mostly cloudy conditions at the resort.  The resort is reporting no significant snowfall over the past 24 hours and snowmaking operations are currently on hold.    They will have all 43 trails open for skiing along with 8 terrain parks with 97 features.  They are reporting a base of 28 to 46 inches with groomed packed powder conditions on the trails. The snow tubing park is open with 10 lanes in operation.   • Tussey Mountain is currently reporting cloudy conditions at the resort.  They have 5 of the 7 trails open at the resort with loose  granular conditions.  They are currently reporting a base of 15 to 30 inches.  The snow-tubing park is open.  Tussey Mountain is located about an hour and 40 minutes northeast of Johnstown.
  • Whitetail near Mercersburg is currently reporting partly sunny skies.  They have not had any significant snowfall over the past 24 hours.  They have 25 trails open as well as 2 terrain parks with 37 features and the half pipe.  They have a base of 46 to 48 inches with loose granular conditions. They also have the snow tubing park open with 10 lanes and the kiddy tubing hill in operation for the weekend.  Whitetail is located just a little over two hours southeast of Johnstown.
  • Wisp Resort in McHenry, Maryland is currently reporting partly sunny conditions this morning. They have not received any significant snowfall over the last 24 hours.  They have 32 trails and 4 terrain parks with 15 features open.  They are reporting a base of 32 inches with groomed packed powder conditions. The snow tubing park is also open with 9 lanes in operation. The Mountain Coaster and Ice Skating Rink are also open this weekend.  The Nordic Ski Center is open this weekend as long as the weather permits.  Wisp is located about an hour and forty-five minutes south of Johnstown.
