Johnstown area snow sports report: ski resorts for March 22, 2013

Seven Springs is currently reporting mostly cloudy conditions with occasional snow flurries at the resort.  The resort is reporting an inch of fresh snow over the past 24 hours and snowmaking operations are currently on hold.    They will have 35 trails open for skiing along with 5 terrain parks with 51 features.  They are reporting a base of 22 to 40 inches with groomed packed powder conditions on the trails. The snow tubing park is open with 10 lanes in operation. All other winter activities are closed for the season .  Seven Springs is located about 55 minutes southwest of Johnstown.Hidden Valley is currently reporting mostly cloudy conditions with occasional snow flurries at the resort.  They have reported an inch of natural snow over the past 24 hours.  They currently have 26 runs open for skiing and 3 terrain parks with 13 features.  They are reporting a base of 20 to 40 inches with packed powder conditions on the slopes. The Outback Snow Tubing Park is closed for the season.  Hidden Valley is located about 50 minutes southwest of Johnstown.Blue Knob is currently reporting cloudy skies with occasional snow flurries today.  They are reporting about 7 inches of snow over the past 48 hours.  They have 30 trails open along with the Playground Terrain Park and Stembogan Bowl.  Snow making operations are shut down for the season at Blue Knob.  They are reporting a base of 30 to 53 inches with groomed packed powder conditions.  The snow-tubing park is closed for the season, as is the Nordic Ski Center.  Blue Knob is located about 45 minutes east of Johnstown.View the list »
Saturday, March 23 is the 11th Annual Pond Skim and Meltdown Party at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. The Pond Skim is a fun way to celebrate spring as the ski season winds down.

One statement that just seems wrong: happy spring, I’m going to go shovel the sidewalk. Spring is here and March is quickly drawing to a close and so is the ski season. Nevertheless, the ski season is not over yet. Snow has been falling throughout the Johnstown area for the past two nights. This has several resorts are looking to stretch two more weeks out of the season at least. It has also encouraged one ski area, Tussey Mountain, to stay open one more week after announcing last week would be the last week of the season. According to some resorts, this could be some of the best skiing of the season.

The forecast for the Johnstown area for this weekend is looking pretty good for skiers and snow boarders. Resorts in the Alleghenies have reported some nice snow totals this past week with some totals up to 12 inches for the week. And they should add a couple more inches through Saturday morning. The area forecast for Friday is calling for an 80% chance of snow showers before noon with light accumulations. There should be a break in the precipitation through Sunday morning when snow should return to the area. The snow may mix with some rain before turning to all rain after 2:00 p.m. but changing back to all snow after 8:00 p.m. Sunday night. Skies will be mostly cloudy to cloudy on Friday and Sunday, with Saturday presenting skiers with partly sunny skies. High temperatures on Friday should be in the mid 30’s with overnight lows in the low 20’s. Saturday’s temperatures should top out in the low 40’s and the overnight lows are expected to drop into the low 20’s. Temperatures on Sunday should top out in the upper 30’s for a high but only dip into the lower 30’s for an overnight low.

Here are some of the notable events and deals at the local ski resorts this weekend:

Blue Knob will be entering their final weekend of operation for the season. During the month of March, they continue to offer March Madness. You can take advantage of some great deals. You can save up to 50% on lodging, lessons, lift tickets and rentals at the resort. For more information check out the Blue Knob website or call the resort at 800-458-3403. The resort will be open for skiing from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Snow tubing at Blue Knob is closed for the season.

Hidden Valley is winding down their season with a couple of special offers. They are offering 25% discounts to military personnel, active or retired. These discounts are good for lift tickets or the Learn to Ski/Ride Programs. They are also holding their Spring Food Drive through closing day. You can get discounts when you bring a non-perishable food item to donate to local food banks. You can get $10 off your lift ticket or at least $10 off a Learn to Ski/Ride Program package. Hidden Valley is operating on a week to week basis, but they are expecting to be open at least one more weekend after this weekend. Snow tubing at Hidden Springs is closed for the season.

Seven Springs continues it month long Spring Break Celebration this weekend with Beach Weekend. This weekend’s events include the 11th annual Pond Skim and Meltdown Party. You can come out and try to conquer the double dip pond skim on Saturday, March 23. Registration for the event is $25 and takes place from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The Pond Skim begins at 11:00 a.m. There are a limited number of slots open for participants, so register early. If skimming the pond is not your thing, stop by and queer the participants on. Seven Springs will be closed from March 25 until March 28, but will re-open on Friday March 29 for Easter weekend. Snow tubing is still open at seven Springs but The Spot and the Superpipe for this season.

Tussey Mountain in Boalsburg has decided to stay open one more weekend. They had announced last weekend would be their last weekend of the season, but a good week of snow has convinced them to try at least one more weekend. They will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Snow tubing at Tussey Mountain is closed for the season.

Wisp Resort continues to have a special offer for the last week and a half of the month of March for military personnel. Military personnel with proper ID can receive 25% off lift tickets, rentals, lessons, tubing, skating and the mountain coaster. This offer is good for the entire month of March. The Mountain Coaster, Ice Skating and Snow Tubing Park remain open at the resort, but the Nordic Ski Center is now closed for the season. Wisp is expecting to remain open through March 31 weather permitting.

So get out and enjoy the slopes this weekend before the season is gone. While at the resorts, don’t forget to take advantage of pre-season sales on 2013-2014 season passes at the lowest prices of the year.   • Tussey Mountain is currently reporting cloudy with occasional snow showers at the resort.  They will be opened on Saturday and Sunday hopefully with 5 of the 7 trails open at the resort with groomed  granular conditions for what could be their last weekend of the season.  They are currently reporting a base of 6 to 12 inches.  The snow-tubing park is closed for the season.  Tussey Mountain is located about an hour and 40 minutes northeast of Johnstown.
  • Wisp Resort in McHenry, Maryland is currently reporting cloudy conditions with occasional snow flurries at the resort. They have not received any significant snowfall over the last 24 hours.  They have 27 trails and 4 terrain parks with 15 features open.  They are reporting a base of 28 inches with groomed packed powder conditions. The snow tubing park is also open with 9 lanes in operation. The Mountain Coaster and Ice Skating Rink are also open this weekend.  The Nordic Ski Center is closed for the season.  Wisp is located about an hour and forty-five minutes south of Johnstown.
