The folklore and mysticism surrounding Jesus has many possible dimensions historically. There has been much debate over the centuries about Jesus, Jesus Christ, Jesus the man, and of course, Jesus as a messianic leader. Many more have debated the actual existence of Jesus, questioning if the Biblical tales are literal, historical, metaphor or mythology.
It is possible that everything that we know is wrong, about Jesus. This is nothing new. These concepts have been discussed at length by scholars within the realms of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and paganism, but this is not what is being considered in this article. The question being posed to the reader here is more basic.
Was Jesus a vampire?
The primary source of this question comes from one of the most popularly cited Biblical scriptures, it should be well known to all Christians. The quote comes from John 6:53-57, which reads as follows below.
...Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live forever because of me."
For those that would argue, that there are no Biblical verses about or related to vampires, this piece of scripture should be pondered. Granted these words are taken in a different context by modern religions, but they have equally possible meanings when taken in context of the ancient world and many belief systems held in such times. When looked at from an alternative context, the question posed above can be taken as comedic, satirical, ironic or quite literal, but the one very possible answer comes forth to those that ponder it.
Jesus was a vampire.
All readers are encouraged to explore the ideas contained on each of the listed photos, but know that you must draw your own conclusions. Some will probably argue that these ideas are just twisted logic and ideological fantasy. Others may assume that this writer is ignorant about the topic, ill-informed or prejudice towards Christianity, but this is not the case.
This author finds the teachings and scriptures written about this man from Galilee to be full of wisdom, but also see them as beautifully scribed prose and interesting mythology. This does not mean that looking at them out of the usual context is right, wrong, moral or immoral. Doing such can only widen the meaning to be drawn from the tales of Jesus, so that the world can expand upon the concepts within the writings about this strange figure from human history or the idealized archetype drawn from the use of religious metaphor.
From my perspective as a pagan, there are many correlations between vampires and the religious traditions centered around Jesus. As Halloween approaches and the seasonal tides move towards days of more darkness than light, this seems the appropriate time of year to discuss such things. Also readers should consider, that there are many who have pondered the concepts of vampirism, as it relates to the story of Jesus Christ.
As a common person living in Phoenix, Arizona, my beliefs are personal and open to many interpretations. This article simply attempts to have a sense of humor, seek out a wider perspective on religious ideas, and to spark debate for those who are open minded. The other side of this same debate could argue, that Christianity is a long standing religious cult that ascribes to some very odd beliefs. Everyone who is religious must understand that supernatural beliefs are weird, at least when they are examined from an outside viewpoint. Some people think that believers in Christianity and Jesus suck, just as vampires suck from a modern perspective. Each of us has the right to believe whatever we choose to.
