The ancient Greeks, who brought us democracy, math, art, mythological Gods and belly dancing, are responsible today for many more things than modern day civil disobedience and fiscal mismanagement.
Besides beautiful Greek women there is the Grecian cuisine and I’m not just talking about gyros or spanakopita.
Greek cuisine, although sharing many characteristics of Middle Eastern, North African and European cuisines is unique. It is a fertile land along pristine and bountiful waters and the Greeks know how to utilize their resources.
A kitchen in Greece makes wide use of native olive oil, herbs, seafood, wine and meats that include lamb and poultry. Phylo pastry, veggies like eggplant, zucchini and olives are also combined with nuts, dates, honey and yogurt.
As in Spain with tapas and Italy with antipasti appetizers, Greece offer mezes, a collective name for small dishes. These are Greek party treats, or orektika as they are called. They are served world wide today and enjoyed by millions.
Served with sides of crisps veggies or soft pita bread and accompanied by Greek wine or ouzo they are Grecian finger foods and dips that can only be experienced by the art of Greek cooking.
Greece is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. Ouzo is traditionally served with water and ice. It becomes cloudy and after a few it can kick your ass. So stay light on the ouzo so you can enjoy the mezes.
So the next time you are at the Parthenon with a Greek Goddess named Athena and a belly dancer gives you a lap dance, take a shot of ouzo, tip your belly dancer and order the mezes.
