The New York Islanders will wrap up their preseason play later today with a doubleheader against the Ottawa Senators. Then it’s on to the regular season starting on Friday, Oct. 4 when the Islanders face the New Jersey Devils in Jersey.

The next night the Isles host the Columbus Blue Jackets for their home opener at 7 p.m. at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.

The Islanders are looking to make a return to the playoffs this season following an early, first round exit against the Pittsburgh Penguins last May. Fans packed the Coliseum for their first taste of Islanders playoff hockey since 2007 following an exciting finish to the regular season.

The team recently named superstar center John Tavares the team captain. Tavares, the 2009 first overall pick in the draft, will be counted on again this year to lead the team to a winning season and into the playoffs.

The success of starting goalie Evgeni Nabokov will also be a key factor for the team.
