The Under Armour Elite 24 returned to New York this year and the patrons that attended the Tobacco Warehouse courts in Brooklyn were treated to an exciting game. Team Coney Island wound up holding off Team Bed Stuy 114-109 on Aug.24.
For a while, it looked like the game was going to be a blow out as Team Coney Island jumped out to a 66-43 at halftime lead.
But Team Bed Stuy made a frantic comeback after falling behind by 30 points early in the second half. Emmanuel Mudiay (Arlington, Texas/Prime Prep Academy) scored 22 points to help bring Team Bed Stuy within four points (110-106) with one minute left in the game.
Team Coney Island’s roster included Whitehead, Tyus Jones, Justin Jackson, Myles Turner, Justise Winslow, Dion Wiley, D’Angelo Russell, Chris Chiozza and Goodluck Okonoboh from the class of 2014; Ivan Rabb and Malik Newman from the class of 2015; Thon Maker from the class of 2016. Former NBA player Mario Ellie coached the team and Michael Rapaport served as an assistant coach.
Team Bed Stuy’s roster included Mudiay, Rashad Vaughn, Stanley Johnson, Chris McCullough, Theo Pinson, Joel Berry, Devin Booker, Romelo Trimble and Kelly Oubre from the class of 2014; Steve Zimmerman and Chieck Diello from the class of 2014; Harry Giles, who did not participate due to injury, from the class of 2016. Pearl Washington served as head coach for the team and was assisted by Lloyd Daniels.
Nine Under Armour Elite 24 players have committed to colleges including Mudiay to SMU, McCullough to Syracuse, Berry, Jackson, and Pinson to North Carolina; Chiozza to Florida, Russell to Ohio State and Trimble and Wiley have both committed to Maryland.
