Over the years, my family and I have owned a variety of breeds of dogs. From the time I lived on the farm as a child until now, our dogs have ranged from beagles, blue tick hounds, Chihuahuas, English shepherds, German shepherds, miniature schnauzers, Pekinese, fox terriers, Jack Russell terriers, rat terriers, Scottish terriers (my current pet), wire-haired terriers, a wolf/shepherd mix and a whole host of mutts who either wandered onto the farm or were rescued from the side of the road by my tender-hearted mom.
While growing up, two of the most beloved characters on television were dogs: Lassie, a beautiful collie; and Rin Tin Tin, a majestic German Shepherd. I had a special affinity with both as someone in my family seemed to always have one or the other most of my life.
According to veterinarian Marty Becker, my current dog, Gwen, a Scottish terrier, is on the list of the five out-of-fashion dog breeds that he misses seeing on a regular basis. Also included on his list are Irish setters, collies, Brittany spaniels and cocker spaniels. You’ll learn a bit more about each of these breeds in the accompanying list which will also include a picture of each breed.
