Indians' Spring Training roster, part two

Who's He?: Chen-Chang Lee has pitched in the Indians minor league system since 2009, appearing with the Akron Aeros and Columbus Clippers. In the last two years, Chang has split time between the AA and AAA levels, all in relief.Hopes for 2013: At just 26 years old, Lee will hope to learn from veteran pitchers at Spring Training and put in another strong year or two in AAA. If he makes a strong impression at camp, the right-hander could be in consideration for a late-season call up in 2013. Masterson has been a familiar face in the Tribe rotation, starting 77 games in the last two seasons alone. His 34 starts last season led the American League.Masterson has been a mixed bag in three full seasons for the Tribe. His strongest season came in 2011, where Masterson featured a 3.21 ERA and 1.278 WHIP. This season has been sandwiched between a 2010 season (4.70 ERA, 1.500 WHIP) and 2012 season (4.93, 1.454).Hopes for 2013: Masterson will look to return to his 2011 form, stay healthy (he hasn't been on the disabled list in three full years in Cleveland) and improve on over 820 innings of big-league experience.
  • Starting pitcher Zach McAllister pitches to Jamey Carroll during the first inning at Progressive Field on September 19, 2012. Who's He?: Zach McAllister is a 25-year old RHP who came to Cleveland in a 2010 deal that sent Austin Kearns to the New York Yankees. The bulk of his major league experience came last season, when he started 22 games for the Tribe. His year was also a mixed bag, with a 4.24 ERA in 125 1/3 innings. He did feature a strikeout to walk ratio of nearly three to one, with 110 strikeouts and just 38 walks.Hopes for 2013: McAllister will hope to break into the Tribe rotation again in 2013 and cement his place as another young, strongly-built starter.
  • Brett Myers pitches in the 9th inning against the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field on July 24, 2012 in Chicago, Illinois. Who's He?: One of the most experienced relief pitchers in the league, Myers was first drafted in the first round of the 1999 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He was signed by the Cleveland Indians as a free agent last month. Myers has spent most of his career as a starter, though he was exclusively used as a reliever in 2012 by the Houston Astros and Chicago White Sox. As a reliever last year, he appeared in 70 games between the two Astros and White Sox, compiling a strong 3.31 ERA and 1.224 WHIP in 65 1/3 innings. Myers has always demonstrated solid control as a major league pitcher, with a career 2.48 strikeout to walk ratio.Hopes for 2013: Myers will look to impress his new club in Spring Training and jump in as one of the most experienced pitchers on the Indians pitching staff. As an 11-year veteran, he may also quickly emerge as a clubhouse leader for the many young pitchers in the organization. 
  • Chris Perez pitches during the ninth inning against the Boston Red Sox at Progressive Field on August 9, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio. Who's He?: Chris Perez is a former first-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was dealt to the Indians in 2009 in a trade that sent Mark DeRosa to St. Louis.Perez has been the primary closer ever since, finishing fourth in the American League in saves in 2011 and 2012. Last year, he turned in another solid season, but struggled at some points. His 0-4 record as a reliever is deceiving; he recorded a 1.127 WHIP and walked just 16 batters in 57 2/3 innings. Perez is set to represent the United States in the upcoming World Baseball Classic this spring. Hopes for 2013: Continue to build off his experience as one of the strongest closers in the American League. In a role which has seen many other teams switch around and replace closers, Perez will look to maintain his spot as the Indians' anchor of the bullpen. 
  • Vinnie Pestano pitches against the Minnesota Twins during the seventh inning of their game on September 25, 2011 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Who's He?: Vinnie Pestano emerged in 2011 as one of the most dominant Indians bullpen arms. As a former 20th round draft pick of the Indians, the 27-year old RHP has appeared in 137 games in relief the past two seasons in Cleveland. In that time, he has amassed an impressive 1.076 WHIP in 132 innings alongside a 2.45 ERA. His strikeout to walk ratio in those two years was 3.33, with 160 strikeouts compared to just 48 walks. Hopes for 2013: Pestano will look to continue to dominate in the back end of the Indians bullpen as the team's primary set-up man in just his third full big-league season.

Most recently, Salazar split time between the Carolina high-A team and the AA Akron Aeros club. In 2012, he started 22 games for those two clubs, with a strong 2.36 ERA and 1.118 WHIP in 87 2/3 innings. He has demonstrated solid control for a minor leaguer, walking just 27 batters last year compared to 76 strikeouts.Hopes for 2013: Salazar will hope to learn from veteran Tribe pitchers at Spring Training camp as he moves up in the Indians organization. In 2013, he is expected to pitch as a starter in the AA-level or the AAA-level in Columbus.

He came to Cleveland in the three-team trade last December that also sent pitchers Matt Albers and Trevor Bauer to the Indians.In two big-league seasons in Arizona as a reliever, the 25-year old RHP has shown he can be a serviceable pitcher in the bullpen. Shaw appeared in 64 games last season, giving up 23 earned runs in 59 1/3 innings. Walks were a slight issue for him last year, as he walked 24 batters in that stretch which contributed to a 1.416 WHIP. Hopes for 2013: Shaw will look to make it into the Indians bullpen for 2013 by proving to his new coaching staff why the Tribe traded for him this offseason. 
  • Relief pitcher Joe Smith pitches against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on August 22, 2012 in Seattle, Washington.Who's He?: Joe Smith was a third-round draft pick by the New York Mets in 2006. He was traded to the Indians in 2008 in a three-team swap that also sent Luis Valbuena to Cleveland and the Tribe sent Franklin Gutierrez to the Seattle Mariners.Smith, a 28-year-old RHP reliever, is a six-year veteran with the Mets and Indians. In four years in Cleveland, Smith has appeared in 233 games out of the bullpen, compiling a solid 2.90 ERA and 1.192 WHIP. While he tends to walk a lot of batters (83 BB's in 208 innings as an Indians), he doesn't give up many hits, keeping runners generally off the basepaths.Hopes for 2013: Smith will look to make it back into the Tribe bullpen after two especially dominant seasons as one of the Indians' best relievers. 
  • Starting pitcher Josh Tomlin pitches during the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Progressive Field on July 22, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio.  Who's He?: Tomlin was first drafted by the Indians in the 19th round in 2006. He made it to the big leagues in 2010, and has since started 54 games in Cleveland.He has been given many chances to start for the Tribe since breaking into the majors, but has never really acclimated to the role. In 2012, he started 16 games, but surrendered 73 earned runs in 103 1/3 innings. While he has shown to be a solid control pitcher, he has a preponderancy to give up a lot of hits and home runs as a big league starter.Hopes for 2013: Tomlin will begin the 2013 season on the disabled list, recovering from Tommy John surgery.
  • Reliever Blake Wood throws a pitch against the Chicago Cubs at Kauffman Stadium on June 24, 2011 in Kansas City, Missouri.Who's He?: Wood is a 27-year old RHP who was first drafted by the Royals in the third round of the 2006 draft. He was claimed off waivers by the Indians this past November. Wood has just two years of major league experience, in 2010 and 2011. In that stretch, he appeared in 106 games, all in relief, compiling a 4.30 ERA and struggling 1.458 WHIP in 119 1/3 big-league innings. Hopes for 2013: Wood will hope to impress his new team by bouncing back strong from Tommy John surgery which sidelined him for the entirety of the 2012 season.
