In a World…: Hilarious Lake Bell claims triple threat status

Experienced actress Lake Bell plants her flag in filmmaking territory with an exceptional writing/directorial debut. Here's why it's a must-see.

Sure, the trailer calls her a triple threat. It’s trying to sell you the movie. But you know what, in this case it’s actually true. And you should see the movie.

Vibing on an emotional wavelength of “hilarious seriousness” not unlike that of “The Kings of Summer” (though radically different in subject matter), “In a World…” represents the best a debut has to offer, and stands as a very fine film in its own right, debut or not.

Like Ben Affleck’s before her, I’m strongly of the mind that Lake Bell’s career will become Something New now that she’s behind the camera, taking her far beyond the purview of her acting filmography. Not to say her body of work isn’t perfectly fine, just that her writing and directorial talents are well worth putting on the permanent priority radar. It's perfectly shot, sublimely edited, superbly performed, and just happens to have won Best Screenplay at Sundance earlier this year.

With “In a World…”, Bell does for the voiceover industry what “Broadcast News” did for, well, broadcast news, and “Best in Show” did for the Westminster Dog Show. Through her character's various professional endeavors, we glimpse its attention to auditory nuance, its honing of the vocal instrument… its competitiveness … and its virtually iron-clad boys’ club when it comes to film trailers. As her character says, it's time for a broad new world.

I’ll happily sign up for anything she creates going forward. Here's why >>
