Since 2006, the U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) in Charlotte North Carolina has provided unlimited opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the wonders and magic of the “Great Outdoors.” Throughout the year, they arrange festivals, races, jams and other outdoor events. However, summer is a very special time.

Every year from June to August, visitors can participate in the (USNWC) “Summer Camp” where they can enjoy “Activities that include whitewater rafting and kayaking, flatwater kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, zip lines and ropes courses.”

The following is a list of nine activities that visitors to the (USNWC) will enjoy. However, it would probably be a good idea to contact the center, visit their website or stop by for a visit.

Wet ‘n’ Wild Adventure Camp

The name Wet n’ Wild Adventure says it all. This themed camp has combined the fun of a traditional summer camp with the excitement of an outdoor adventure experience. With a range of AllSport Activities that includes, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, flatwater kayaking and team building activities, this will be a camp that your child will not forget.

Camp Information:

  • Price: $300 per week
  • Ages: 8 – 12 years
  • Camp Schedule:
    • Optional Early Drop Off (Additional $50 fee): 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
    • Regular Drop Off: 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
    • Camp Activities: 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    • Camp Pickup: 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
  • Fridays Parents’ Pass – Parents can purchase a Sunset Pass on Fridays to participate in activities with their child. There is no additional cost to the child if they are participating in camp that week. The pass is good for activities after 4 p.m. until close.  You must receive the coupon from camp staff at the check-in table at 4 p.m. on Friday.
  • Campers provide their own lunch and snacks.

Coastal Camp

Coastal Camp

Explore the adventures of the coast in this all inclusive, five-day overnight camp.  Leaving Monday, campers will embark on a five-day excursion to James Island State Park (outside of Charleston, SC). During the trip, the group will participate in numerous adventures including, but not limited to: sea kayak instruction/tours, stand-up paddle boarding, and surf lessons.  Campers will also learn about camp set up, food preparation and campsite cooking as they work in a team environment to support each other.  Access to the James Island waterpark and climbing wall will also be provided as a group activity.

Camp Information

  • Price: $1,200 per camper
    • Please note that this includes food, camping and activities. We do advise participants to bring no more than $50 if they would like to purchase anything outside what is included.
    • Meals include:
      • Monday: lunch and dinner
      • Tues – Thurs: breakfast, lunch and dinner
      • Friday: breakfast and lunch
  • Ages: 13 – 15 years
  • Minimum capacity: 6
  • Maximum capacity: 10

Wilderness Voyageurs Camp

Wilderness Voyageurs Camp

Just like our Wet N’ Wild camp, Wilderness Voyageurs campers will experience a wide range of AllSport Activities including whitewater rafting, ropes courses and zip-lines. What sets this camp apart from our Wet N’ Wild camp is its focus on the exploration of the outdoors. Camp participants will gain first hand knowledge of wilderness survival techniques and explore nature through eco-scavenger hunts and games. The Wilderness Voyageurs camp is great for the child who loves to spend time exploring the outdoors.

Whitewater Kayak Camp

Whitewater Kayak Camp

The Whitewater Kayak Camp is a full day camp that will introduce your child to whitewater kayaking in a comfortable and safe environment through the guidance of our instructors. Starting off with basic boat control and building confidence, campers will progress through the week learning more advanced skills, such as rolling.

  • Price: $400 per week
  • Ages: 10 – 18 years
  • Camp Schedule:
    • Optional Early Drop Off (Additional $50 fee): 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.

Survival Camp

Survival Camp

Survival Camp will develop and test your child’s ability to survive in the wild. We instill techniques such as shelter-building, wilderness first aid, fire building, lost proofing and map and compass skills. With a survival focus your child will also participate in games and team building activities. Each session operates like a day camp with one overnight stay at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.

Rock, Ride and Paddle Camp I

Rock, Ride and Paddle Camp I focuses on building your kid’s basic skills in mountain biking, rock climbing and whitewater kayaking. Each day is split into two unique clinics, focusing on activities and skill enhancements that will challenge your child, while developing their confidence. Prior experience needed in basic bike riding skills. Campers also have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of additional activities at the USNWC including whitewater rafting.

Backcountry Camping 101

Backcountry Camping 101

Backcountry Camping teaches your child the fundamentals of backcountry travel including, but not limited to:  proper packing, land navigation, campsite preparation, working in a team dynamic, and wilderness cooking. Throughout the week, AllSport Activities will be included for campers. On Thursday of the camp session, the campers and counselors will head to South Mountain State Park for an overnight stay in the backcountry.  During the trip, campers will have to work as a team in campsite preparation and cooking meals.  They will also have an opportunity for a fun side hike to a waterfall.

Camp Information:

  • Price: $450 per week
  • Ages: 11 – 13 years
  • Prerequisites:
    • Highly recommend that campers have completed Survival Camp I or have experience camping with youth groups to ensure comfort with sleeping outdoors.
    • Must be able to hike on moderate terrain while carrying a backpack that weighs up to 35lbs.
  • Capacity: 10
  • Camp Schedule:
  • Optional Early Drop Off (Additional $50 fee): 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.

Rock, Ride and Paddle Camp II

Rock, Ride and Paddle Camp II

Rock, Ride and Paddle Camp II is the next step up from Rock, Ride and Paddle. During the week, campers will gain more experience in climbing and whitewater kayaking at the USNWC, while also participating in AllSport activities. What sets this camp apart from Rock, Ride, and Paddle are the two off-site trips. Campers will have the opportunity challenge their skill level by climbing the steep, rocky faces of Crowders Mountain and paddle the rapids of the lower Green River. Please review the parent packet for more information on the off-site trips.

Camp Information:

  • Price: $450 per week
  • Ages: 10 – 16 years old
  • Prerequisites:
    • Must have completed Rock, Ride, and Paddle Camp I or Kayak Camp within the last year.
    • Must be able to hike on moderate terrain carrying a backpack weighing up to 35lbs
      (boats, climbing gear, etc.).
    • Must pass the paddle test to kayak the lower Green River .

Teen Adventure Camp

The focus of this camp is to both have fun and enjoy the activities the USNWC has to offer in a group dynamic. Campers will participate in a wide range of AllSport Activities, which include (but are not limited to) whitewater rafting, rock climbing, high ropes courses and team building activities. Each camper will walk away with cool stories, great experiences, and new friends.
