Icy weather possible later this week

Colder air will continue to filter into the region this afternoon. Scattered flurries and snow showers will possible through the evening hours. Very little if any accumulation is expected. Wind gusts will remain in the 25 to 35 mph range throughout the rest of the day causing wind chills to dip into the teens and single digits.

Skies will stay mostly cloudy tonight, but a stiff northwesterly wind will continue to usher in colder air. Expect lows to bottom out near 16 degrees in Columbus with the wind making it feel more like the single digits or even near zero! Clouds will be tough to thin out on Wednesday, however some peaks of sun will be possible by late afternoon. The clouds will hold temperatures to only the middle 20s.

Thursday will be the calm before the next storm system hits our area. We will begin with mostly sunny skies but see clouds gradually increase throughout the day. Highs will top out near the freezing mark which is important for what will happen later Thursday night.

An approaching weather system will begin to draw warm air up from the south late Thursday evening. Temperatures well above the ground will increase much faster than near the ground. With surface temperatures falling below freezing on Thursday evening, conditions will become favorable for freezing rain to occur.

Precipitation is expected to develop after midnight on Thursday night and fall initially in the form of a wintry mix. This mix could include snow, sleet, and freezing rain but will transition to all freezing rain fairly quickly. The temperature is not expected to rise above freezing until after 8 a.m. on Friday morning meaning that road conditions could become hazardous before that point in time. Luckily the precipitation is expected to be light, but a glaze of ice may still form on roads, trees, and power lines. Stay with examiner.com for the latest developments as this system approaches.

Once the temperature rises above freezing Friday, any frozen precipitation will changeover to plain rain. The rain is expected to only be scattered in nature through the afternoon hours. Warmer weather will return for Friday afternoon and this weekend. Highs will top out in the middle 40s for Friday and Saturday. The temperature will fall only slightly as we head into Sunday.
