Its football season and folks are gearing up for outdoor barbeques and parties to cheer on their favorite team. Why not serve a cake for dessert that lets your friends know what team is in the spotlight for the party? Here is how to decorate a cake dedicated to just that favorite team.
1 12 inch round, or square cake, 1 layer high
1 football helmet shaped cake
3 recipes of buttercream icing tinted in the colors of the favorite football team, or store bought white icing will work as well. (Colors for the football field will be green and light blue, face mask on helmet will be done in grey).
Cake board, large enough to fit entire cake with room on all sides to spare
Cake decorating tools: spatula, plain tips, star tips, grass tip
Level the round (or square cake) so that it’s flat and no hills remains. Ice the top of the cake smooth using light green icing. Ice the edge of the bottom cake using light blue. Using a sharp dowel rod, trace straight lines on the top of the cake to represent ‘yards’ on a field.
Ice the helmet shaped cake white and carefully position the helmet cake in the center of the football field.
Using the sharp dowel rod trace the face mask on the helmet and fill in the lines with grey icing.
Using the icing colors for the team of choice, and a #16 star tip, gently pipe stars over the sides and top of the helmet cake. Be careful to avoid the white circles on the helmet.
Using a plain tip and white icing, pipe the traced yard lines on the football field. Use a bigger plain tip and other decorating tools of choice to place the corresponding logos and signs on the face of the helmet.
If desired, place ‘GO _____ (the team name) on the field. For example: GO GIANTS, as shown here.
Use a grass tip and dark green icing to pipe grass blades on the side of the bottom cake layer.
Last but not least; enjoy the sweet creation and cross your fingers that the team on the cake will win the game.
