This week's box office showed a bit of life, thanks in large part to a $40 million take for James Wan's "Insidious 2". The opening weekend take was so impressive, the crew has been offered options on "Insidious 3", which will start production next month.
The closest competition to "Insidious 2" is "Family", the Robert DeNiro comedy which culled only $14 million.
"Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" continued to be a major disappointment. After a month in release, its only managed $30 million in take.
"The Grandmaster", another story of Wing Chung expert Ip Man premiered in the 23rd spot in very limited release. Don't look for a major nationwide release promo.
Opening this weekend is "Prisoners", a psychological thriller with Hugh Jackman. It's Hitchcock like in theme and may struggle to find an audience, especially among the younger audiences. Plus, beginning Wednesday and carrying on through the weekend, Verizon Fios is offering a free on demand marathon. It's a great promotional ploy and may affect the box office draw in this market. We'll see how it plays for next week.
