-This is a disclaimer acknowledging that every Friday from here on out I will provide to you a weeks worth of Horror movies on the rental and VOD circuit. Some of these movies are so bad they will never see the light of day on the main screen but some are hidden gems unknown to the general mainstream moviegoers. I feel it its my duty to make sure you don’t miss out on any future cult classics so I bring to you my weekly installment of Horror Movies Uncut. The thoughts and opinions on these reviews are clearly my own and should be shared by many!
BEST PICK OF THE WEEK
ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE-
This film hit my top list of must see horror films when it was released back in 2006. I was blown away by the throwback giallo style portrayed in the film and was hooked to the end. All The Boys Love Mandy Lane not only takes you back to the first american style slasher that caught your attention it also has flawless execution. Don't be worried about the team of Amber Heard and Jonathan Levine if you disliked Warm Bodies Mandy Lane is the real deal. The story involves the best looking girl in high school hanging out with the popular kids but for some reason bodies start piling up. This film has intensity, gore and amazing death scenes. All The Boys Love Mandy Lane is available right now on VOD and it is worth the price. 5/5
*available on all VOD outlets
THE REST OF THE FILMS
I had a feeling this movie would be good but not this good. Scenic Route is not a horror by any stretch of the imagination. It has some horror qualities but the performances by Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler are award worthy. Two long term friends are traveling through the desert when their truck breaks down. After finding out it was a ploy by Fogler to start a conversation with Duhamel the two erupt into a battle of life call outs and relationships with not only women but passions of the past. Scenic Route turns into a bloody, dark humours buddy flick that would have been what really happened in Due Date. I really enjoyed this movie and the dark turn it takes at the very end really completed the film. I was upset when this hit limited theaters and did not head our way but i’m glad it’s available to take home now. It won’t be on my top horror films of the year list but it may end up on my top films to see in general this year. Pick up Scenic Route this weekend as I think you will really enjoy it. 4/5
This is the worst movie on the list this week and really was a pain to watch. From start to finish there was a luminous effect that held through the movie. It became really annoying and so did the interaction with the spirits. The film had slight potential when it started but as soon as the evil started Asylum went downhill from there. I like that they story involved the Typhoid Mary tale but the film became stale and pointless as soon as it introduced the dark spirit. Stay away from this one folks as the film clocks in around an hour and forty five minutes so unless you don't want to lose that time stay away.1/5
Read my review for World War Z here, I really enjoyed World War Z and was anxious to see how it would translate to the home audience. So far so good as we live in an age of big televisions so big blockbuster films work at home too. Try not to hate Brad Pitt as if you don’t know what type of actor he is but look at how well the movie blends together and to me that sticks out more than anything. This film is very entertaining from start to finish and that is all it needed to be. 4/5
THE HAUNTING OF HELENA-
I didn’t have high expectations for this film as I felt the plot reminded me of Darkness Falls. I felt the mother played by Harriet MacMasters Green did a fine job of carrying the movie but too many things hurt this film. First the horrible sound effects used in the film felt cheap and rushed. Seemed to me the budget of the film could afford a better audio but maybe it had something to do with the translation of the film. The Italian film had a few intriguing parts and fans of some of the more recent supernatural films may enjoy this. I think Helena is a good mainstream horror so i would recommend this to some fans but others I would tell to stay clear. 2/5
Unless noted these films along with every film on Horror Movies Uncut can be found at your local Family Video location.
