-This is a disclaimer acknowledging that every Friday from here on out I will provide to you a weeks worth of Horror movies on the rental and VOD circuit. Some of these movies are so bad they will never see the light of day on the main screen but some are hidden gems unknown to the general mainstream moviegoers. I feel it its my duty to make sure you don’t miss out on any future cult classics so I bring to you my weekly installment of Horror Movies Uncut. The thoughts and opinions on these reviews are clearly my own and should be shared by many!
BEST PICK OF THE WEEK
Read my official review for The Conjuring here. This hands down was the best horror film in theaters this past year. James Wan and the amazing cast proved that with the right talent and budget you can create a creepy horror story like those from the past. I really applaud them for not bringing this film into the current era and utilizing the setting and time period to the full advantage. The Conjuring is smart, funny, scary, and creepy just like most horror films aspire to be. I can’t wait for the sequel (prequel) to this as The Conjuring is clearly a must see and have film of 2013.
THE REST OF THE FILMS
If not for the movie just mentioned this would be my pick of the week. I don’t know why I liked this movie so much. If I were to give a reason it’s due to the smartly done brutality found in this movie. After hearing the premise and seeing the box cover I was all too ready to dismiss this film. But from the moment it started its a very well done found footage movie that has tons more substance than most. So many films of this genre leave out details that could help the execution of the film but that's not true here. Penance is about a girl trying out for a Reality Show to win the prize money and help with her daughters medical bills. She turns to stripping with the help of a friend and unfortunately takes the wrong job. The film has a pretty amazing cast including Tony Todd, Michael Rooker, and Graham McTavish. Its pretty sick and twisted which is the exact opposite of what I expected. If you can stomach the gore Penance should be the film you should check out this week! 3/5
DEAD IN TOMBSTONE-
This weeks Danny Trejo entry is the horror/action/ western Dead in Tombstone. Out of all the films I've watched with him in the last month including Machete Kills this film is his best work as of yet. Of course he is awesome as Machete but this film is of a different kind. If you walked in on this movie you would assume it’s just another shoot em up western. The horror comes in when Satan allows Trejo’s character to come back to life to kill the six members of his gang who turned on him. I think the cast did a fairly good job except for Satan played by a less than inspiring Mickey Rourke. I for one still think the film was decent watch even though the story really brings nothing new to the table. There are a few good stop motion scenes in this film but other than that nothing great in regards to effects. This would be a horror movie I feel like I could show to fans of westerns but I don't think the general population would like it. I say give it a chance it's a good shoot em up flick and it's nice to see Trejo deliver more than the one liners we are used too. 3/5
Read my review for Bad Milo here. This film is currently showing on vod outlets and if you are looking for a good laugh this is it. Bad Milo stars Ken Marino as a stressed out business man with a demon living in his intestines. Things turn for the worse as the monster starts to kill to avenge his protector. The film has a great cast and laughs a plenty. It’s still opening at limited theaters across the country so seeing this on demand is not a bad idea. Regardless if you don’t see Bad Milo until it comes out on DVD you will still be pleased. It will remind you of the classic creature features from the 80’s and is for sure a must see. 3/5
*currently available on demand
RETURN OF THE KILLER SHREWS-
This was supposed to be a sequel to the classic monster movie from the 50’s but its just all wrong. The CGI of the shrews was unbearable and completely unneeded. It would have been nice to see the guys get creative with this and use puppets or some other way of creating the creature. This was nothing more than a very bad side of the SyFy TV style movies but even their work of late has been better. This one I’m sure most of you would have passed on anyway so just stick with your instincts. 1/5
CHILLING VISIONS 5 SENSES OF FEAR-
This short film anthology has a pretty cool concept. All five of our senses are used in each horror short in their own unique way. I would say Touch was my favorite and Taste was pretty sick. This wouldn't be a bad idea to grab this Halloween season as the films are over fast but provide a lot of entertainment along the way. Not all the films are great but I think you will enjoy Chilling as each tale provides a unique horror take on the things we take for granted everyday.
This by far was not what you expect when you think leprechaun movie. It has an ancient looking demon that has been tricked into looking for his gold. There is no pot as these things eat the gold and they are out for the kill. Its a dark and demented tale but not big on the scare factor. If you are a fan of folklore horror then you may think Red Clover isn't too bad. For some reason it has a solid cast in it including names like Billy Zane. Red Clover is a lot of fun and has it’s moments. Other than that it’s a B- movie that many won’t enjoy.
Unless noted these films can be found at your local Family Video locations.
