-This is a disclaimer acknowledging that every Friday from here on out I will provide to you a weeks worth of Horror movies on the rental and VOD circuit. Some of these movies are so bad they will never see the light of day on the main screen but some are hidden gems unknown to the general mainstream moviegoers. I feel it its my duty to make sure you don’t miss out on any future cult classics so I bring to you my weekly installment of Horror Movies Uncut. The thoughts and opinions on these reviews are clearly my own and should be shared by many!
BEST PICK OF THE WEEK
With the titles available this week you may be surprised by this answer. I loved this movie as I have been telling folks that it’s a cross between Single White Female and Fight Club. The movie is about a writer being told to move out of the city by her PA so she can finish her book. Come to find out this PA is an insane lunatic who keeps the writer hostage and tortured her not only in the body but the mind too. There is an unexpected twist in the end but the beauty of Stalker is the tension filled drama between the two women. Stalker I assumed would be another one of the lifetime thriller movies and I was totally wrong. I heard a review from someone saying they thought this was not a horror because there was no gore. Mark my word those people never saw this film. It’s a horror movie through and through and believe me there is enough blood and gore to keep you interested in. Make sure you look for Stalker this week as there aren’t many copies around but if you see it you will be glad you did. 4/5
THE REST OF THE FILMS
This one was tough as I really enjoyed this film. If the pick this week wasn’t so much of a surprise this would have won hands down. Pacific Rim is a big monster vs robots movie that has a pretty good story and great acting underneath. There isn't too much that will surprise you about Pacific Rim and thats the great thing about the film. After a brief intro of how the monsters came to be you are thrown right in the middle of a war. Pacific Rim is action packed from start to finish and I applaud Del Toro and crew for making one of the only films with great CGI outside of the Transformers franchise. Not all horror fans like the big bad robot movies but this one gets it. If you grew up watching the legends like Godzilla and King Kong then Pacific Rim is right up your alley and for sure one of the films to see this month. 4/5
Another candidate for pick of the week is the remake of the gore filled Maniac starring Elijah Wood. This pov horror is very well done and exceptional in many ways. I was curious if the brutality of the first would be found here and I’m happy to say it was. Wood does a wonderful job in the film but what stands out the most if the great cinematography. Some films don’t need remakes while others help spark the interest of the previous film. I would say Maniac is the type of film to break the mold and actually be better than the original. Those with weak stomachs may want to pass on this one but you will be upset if you do as it is for sure one to watch this week. The story involves Wood as a owner of mannequin shop and unfortunately can't handle the demons residing in his head. 4/5
Read my official review for Haunter here. I really enjoyed this film but it does lack on the scare factor. If you have any kids in their teens you may want them to see Haunter as it’s a great movie for this time of the year. Abigail Breslin plays a young woman trapped as a ghost in her house. Her main goal is to help the young lady currently in the house from reaching the same fate. Haunter looks wonderful and has an eeriness found in many of the current supernatural films but lacks the scares of them. Its still worth the watch what you may be weary of that expensive VOD price. Just remember this film is currently only showing on VOD so why not watch it before the others, no pun intended?
*currently available on all VOD platforms
Read my official review for The Colony here. The Colony is about an ice age where the resources are limited and the fight for survival is intense. Add to that a group of cannibals and you can see the appeal for The Colony. The film has an all star cast and the movie is solid enough for any horror /sci fi fan. There are a few moments that drag in the film but there really wasn’t much I disliked about it. Most critics are too busy trying to compare this film with other cold weather horror but I believe The Colony stands along. Cannibal movies are all the rage in horror these days and The Colony should be at the top of your list to see if you are a fan of that sub genre. 3/5
EMBRACE OF THE VAMPIRE-
Yes this is the week of remakes folks! This film was based off the 1995 vampire film of the same name. Though there is quite a lot of blood in Embrace it really falls along the lines of a late night soft core porn film. It makes since because the original was exactly the same. These erotic vampire films have always had their place in horror but they aren’t for everyone. The film involves a new girl at a coed school trying to escape her past. The problem is there is an ancient evil there waiting on her too that will release a part of her she is trying to forget. I don’t think many fans will be pleased by this film and once the killing truly starts its becomes a little over the top. But hey it’s a vampire movie with a naked women so something about it has to be good right?1/5
Otherwise known as Zombie Apocalypse: Epidemic. We all know why the name change was done but this movie is of another heartbeat. The film stars Fred Williamson which is awesome but outside of that it’s just another zombie romp. It reminds me of the latter Resident Evil films as it looks at a society overrun by zombies. In this film a group of survivors has found an outcast from a tribe of looters and they find out the zombies aren't the only thing to worry about. It’s a violent movie that has a big Mad Max feel to it but it will be one to pass on unless you truly love the zombie films and watch them at any cost. 1/5
Another lukewarm film this week that tries to be more than it really is. Phobia is set back in 1885 and involves a female doctor that has a patient involved in a crime. The issue is this patient may be a vampire. Phobia takes a while to get going and the back and forth of the English and French seems unnecessary. I was suprised to this indie flick as it felt like I was watching something on PBS or BBC. It takes a lot to do a period piece so I applaud them for giving it a chance. The movie will remind you of a Jack the Ripper type murder mystery than anything but the story is not too exciting. Phobia isn’t a horrible film but there is too much other stuff going on in the movie to make this a solid horror film to watch this week. Pass it up! 2/5
BIRDEMIC 2 THE RESURRECTION-
The sequel to the gimmick filled horror Birdemic 2 The Resurrection is available on dvd this week. The main issue is the first one was so bad it was a classic but you can only get away with it one time. I’m sure the creators are hoping those that didn’t see the first stumble on this one and look at it the same way. If not I don’t know what they were trying to do here. I don’t think anyone will be a fan of this film. There really is nothing good about this film. I know its the point but i’m sorry this just doesn’t work this time around. After creating a gem like the first Birdemic why not move on and show you can do something different instead of trying to capitalize on a one time thing. 1/5
Unless noted these films can be found at your local Family Video locations.
