-This is a disclaimer acknowledging that every Friday from here on out I will provide to you a weeks worth of Horror movies on the rental and VOD circuit. Some of these movies are so bad they will never see the light of day on the main screen but some are hidden gems unknown to the general mainstream moviegoers. I feel it its my duty to make sure you don’t miss out on any future cult classics so I bring to you my weekly installment of Horror Movies Uncut. The thoughts and opinions on these reviews are clearly my own and should be shared by many!
BEST PICK OF THE WEEK
Now i’m sure most of you are like what? No way Travis likes this movie. Not after you crushed the first remake how dare you like this one. It’s true I really enjoyed this film. Upon watching it it made me think the one with Colin Farrell was completely pointless and this should have been the remake. In this film we find the familiar characters of Charlie Brewster, his best friend Evil and girlfriend Amy. This time the crew is studying abroad in Romania and has a new professor Gerri Dandridge that has a little more to offer in regards to post classroom studies. I was very surprised to see the direction of this tale as we find out she is the queen of the undead Elizabeth Bathory. Adding the comic section to tell the history of Bathory was genius as it did not take away from the film. All in all this is a great violent vampire romp and it’s well overdue. Having the great Peter Vincent has a TV ghost hunter showed that the crew knew how to bring this tale into this day and age the right way. No Mc Lovin here but definitely Mc better! Pick this one up tonight! 3/5
THE REST OF THE FILMS
This one was a little hard to watch. It involves a young lady that is witnessing her Amish (yes Amish) community become possessed by a demon. Unable to stop it shes must try and survive while being overtaken by the demon herself. I’m not mad at bringing this type of dynamic to the amish community but the movie has many down points. Acting aside there was nothing that really stood out about this movie to make it worthy of your rental. Maybe with a bigger budget this film could be somewhat watchable but with some indie flicks the ideas trump the execution. Take a pass on this 1/5
This movie was awful even though I was able to sit through it easily. Luckily it came in around 90 minutes and that may be the best thing about this film. It involves a Halloween prank gone wrong. There is a lot of dialogue in this film as the crew enderetes the abandoned mine shaft but the the scare factor is at an all time low. There is a ghost tale involved that sets the foundation for the prank but this movie maybe hard to turn off. It starts with tons of promise at the beginning and to be honest I didn’t mind how it ended. Its nice to try and use normal human emotion to scare the audiences when people are trapped in an endless maze that goes nowhere but waiting for a scare to happen is no way to do a horror movie. The cast isn’t to bad and do a good job of moving the film along but it’s a hard film to deal with because in no way whatsoever is this scary.
With the type of lineup that you have in this end of the world comedy you would expect this to be a classic. The problem is it fails to live up to the hype of comedians in the movie. Of course This Is The End has tons of funny parts but it just seemed as if they tried to do too much while showing there was no effort to make this film. It should have been shorter by at least 30 mins and by the time the Devil and demons show up you could care less about what direction they are going with the film. This is not a true horror movie but more a dark comedy with some horror elements. I would have like to see how this movie would have panned out if there were zombies or UFO’s or something else to keep you interested but I see why the kiddies are eating this up. If you aren’t a fan of any of these guys like Seth Rogen & Jonah Hill then you already passed on this. I would warn fans of their work though don’t be surprised if after watching This is The End you ask yourself the same question. 2/5
Jamie Kennedy has been around horror since his legendary character of Randy from the Scream movies. In this film he plays the one doing the killing. 4 Closed is about a deranged man whose mother passed away and he is forced out of his home. The house is bought by a deaf woman and her husband who is a recovering alcoholic. Outside of the solid performance by Kennedy this movie has some issues. First for a horror there is not too much blood. This film would fall in the category of home invasion but seems pretty far fetched. Its not a bad film overall and I think some may get a kick out of it. Its hard to see someone terrorizing a whole family with just a taser but you never know. It’s not a bad film to watch but its more of a thriller than a true horror. 2/5
I saw this movie about a year ago and was pleased at the whole zeemon concept. The sad part is while this film circled festivals there have been about 10 horrible films made of the same brand. Dead Before Dawn still outshines the other as it is a witty horror comedy filled with the right amount of gore to keep you interested. It follows a group of college kids who are held up in the university library as student after student are tuning into a zeemon. This will be a good pickup for an entertaining night of popcorn horror. It’s nice to finally see this movie released and if you want a good old fashion gore filled romp this is the film to see! 3/5
Unless noted these films along with every film on Horror Movies Uncut can be found at your local Family Video location.
