-This is a disclaimer acknowledging that every Friday from here on out I will provide to you a weeks worth of Horror movies on the rental and VOD circuit. Some of these movies are so bad they will never see the light of day on the main screen but some are hidden gems unknown to the general mainstream moviegoers. I feel it its my duty to make sure you don’t miss out on any future cult classics so I bring to you my weekly installment of Horror Movies Uncut. The thoughts and opinions on these reviews are clearly my own and should be shared by many!
BEST PICK OF THE WEEK
This film is also titled Modus Anomali and is a very intriguing film. My only issue with it is the constant following of the main character but if they meant to drive you insane it worked. The story follows a man that has woken up after being buried only to find his family missing. He stumbles into a cottage and sees a TV and camera setup. Soon he watches his wife being brutally murdered before him. After that he searches for his children and the worse of the worse happens to him. This is a very intense film that I really enjoyed. Survival horror is really picking up steam these days and The Ritual is an good example of it. The creators must have wanted to appeal to a wide audience because the film is already dubbed. That is a good thing as it will allow the fans to enjoy the film. This is the movie to see this week so pick it up and don’t worry about the lackluster cover work its worth the rental for sure. 3/5
THE REST OF THE FILMS-
Wow what can I say. I was really disappointed in this train wreck. With such an appreciation for the first this effort seemed rushed unoriginal and not really worthwhile. Each of the tales hit me in the same way which is what I enjoyed the most about the first. Even though there was the alien slumber party and the zombie biker cam I felt myself saying “is that it?” after it was over. The cult part was long and really annoying and the monster that came from it? Please. This is what is wrong with horror these days. Just brutal laziness. You have the type of directors with the potential to do some great stuff and it seemed as if we just received the leftovers from the first VHS. I know many will disagree with me on this film and I could care less. I watch at least 30 new horror films a month so I have the knowledge to know what's good and what's filler. This my friends was a filler. Don’t spend the cash for the on demand price wait for this on Netflix. 1/5
*VHS 2 is now available on all on demand outlets and available on DVD on 9/24
First directing debut of scream royalty Danielle Harris. While the work behind the camera wasn't bad the movie itself was horrible. Just another group around the table movie that is getting older by the minute. I’m starting to be done with this whole fascination of rape causes extreme torture scenarios. It’s really getting stale. In a sense this is a horrible version of many films in the same light and I have not seen one live up to The Loved Ones. I hope to see Danielle continue with directing because I think she has a great eye , but I hope she chooses a better story next time. This may look appealing in the stores but pass on it folks. 1/5
*Updated for DVD Release
Read my review for Stranded here. This selection is now on DVD and from what I read from other critics we all look at it the same. Stranded is not a horrible movie its just a rehashing of every sci fi thriller known to man. I am slightly disappointed with efforts like this because it allows the mainstream to continue to look over this genre as relevant to the horror culture. This is not true but Stranded feels so much like films of the past that I can't argue with that point much. Don’t get me wrong there will always be a fan base for these types of movies and its nice to see that from the comfort of their homes they can order these movies. If you are into sci fi horror it is right up your alley. Others may want to stay away. 2/5
Oh Mischa Mischa. Two weeks in a row and not much of the same. The movie is about a high school loser who had the perfect older brother. His brother was run down by a group of popular jocks and has been resurrected to enact his revenge. It’s not a bad story just was not executed that well. In short moments Mischa is good as the school counselor. The lack luster tension between her and the boy really hurt the longer moments. It’s good to see Michael Clarke Duncan in this but my main issue was the kills. The brother is brought back from the dead and goes on a killing spree but we only see one of his kills. I felt like we were getting robbed of the good stuff all the way through the film. A Resurrection has it’s moments but they are few and far in between. If you are a fan of supernatural films you may like this more but most of you I would tell to let it be. 1/5
Unless noted these films can be found at your local Family Video Locations.
