Shyness can strike any kid, while gifted children, especially highly sensitive ones, often have to deal with anxiety on top of that.
This can be a particular problem in New York City where, in order to qualify for a Gifted & Talented public school program or a rigerous private school, children as young as three and four need to be tested and interviewed (this is especially ironic as mountains of research indicates the futility of testing children before the age of eight or so).
Still, parents looking to gain admission into a test-based program are required to jump through the requisite hoops - no exceptions. And that means subjecting their possibly shy and anxious pre-schooler to up to an hour alone with a complete stranger, asking them questions, challenging them with puzzles, incomplete patterns, word analogies and oddly shaped blocks. In addition, after the standardized testing, some schools schedule a follow up "play date," where children are put through the same paces, but this time in a group.
All of it can be extremely overwhelming, and more than one child has been known to shut down, refuse to answer, interact, perform, or even stay in the room (who can blame them?). Which is where Pocket Frenz come in.
