Located at 720 Ashton Avenue in the Sugar House area of Salt Lake City, this home is now known as Parrish Place.Originally named the Cannon House, this home was built in 1890 for George Mousely Cannon and his wife Marian Adelaide “Addie” Morris Cannon.  The home is an eclectic Late Victorian style located in the Forest Dale area of Salt Lake City.George M. Cannon was a prominent business and civic leader who is best known for his establishment and promotion of one of the earliest streetcar suburbs, Forest Dale, which reflects a late nineteenth century trend of middle and upper class families to seek residences outside the older and more established areas of the city.In 1886, George and his brother John began a real estate business and purchased part of what had been Brigham Young's Forest Farm in 1889. The brothers developed the area as a residential subdivision by dividing the land into building lots and renaming the area Forest Dale. The George M. Cannon house was one of the first to be built in the new subdivision.Cannon instigated the successful move to incorporate the town of Forest Dale (500 East to Highland Drive, 2100-2700 South), in 1902, however, due to rising municipal costs, the town disincorporated in 1912 and was annexed back to Salt Lake City.George and Addie Cannon raised nine children in the home.  Lucille Cannon Bennion, a daughter of George and Addie, and her husband, Glynn, bought the house from her father in 1935, although he lived with them for much of the time until his death in 1937.The Emanuel Kahn House, a historic home located at 678 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah, now operates as the Anniversary Inn bed and breakfast.The Queen Anne style mansion was built in 1889 by Emmanuel and Fanny Kahn and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.  Emanuel and hist brother, Samuel, were some of the first Jewish people to settle in Salt Lake.  They started the Kahn Brothers store which became one of the largest grocery stores in the valley.The Queen Ann style of building has many details and wood carvings.  This style is also refereed to as "gingerbread."Located at 936 East 1700 South in Salt Lake City, Byron Cummings House was built in 1891 and is now known as the Wildflowers Inn.This house is significant for its association with Byron Cummings, a prominent educator, a nationally recognized archaeologist and the principal founder of the athletics program at the University of Utah.The original owner of the house was Charles S. Best arranged, finest finished house in Perkins, only $1000 or $2000 cash required, very easy terms.Bennett was unable to sell the house until 1895. Byron and Isabella McLaury Cummings, who had been living at 5 Carter Terrace (537 W. 100 South), bought the house for $2,531 in September 1895, soon after their marriage.  Mr. Cummings had come to Salt Lake City in 1893 from New Brunswick, New Jersey to be an instructor in English and Latin at the University of Utah.At the University of Utah, Cummings became a professor of ancient languages and the first dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the university in 1906. He also served on the Salt Lake City Board of Education (1902-1910) and on the State Park Commission (1909-1915). After developing an interest in archaeology in the early 1900s, he became a nationally known archaeologist and led the parties that discovered Rainbow Natural Bridge on August 14, 1909.He also led other parties in significant discover IBS in Arizona and Mexico, including the National Geographic Society expedition that uncovered the pyramid of Cuicuilco in the Valley of Mexico in 1924-25.Byron Cummings was best known, however, for his support in helping found the athletics program en the University of Utah campus. Referred to as "the father of athletics at the university," he was a charter member of the university of Utah Athletic Association in 1894 and served as its first treasurer.The Cummings sold this house in 1919 and it passed through a number of different owners.View the list »

  • Located at 667 East 100 South in Salt Lake City, the Armstrong mansion was built in 1893 as the family home of Francis and Isabelle Armstrong.Francis Armstrong was a two-time elected mayor of Salt Lake City (1886 and 1888) and entrepreneur, notably in the Taylor, Romney, and Armstrong lumber and construction company. Francis Armstrong was born in 1839 in Northumberland, England, son of a machinist.  The family immigrated to Canada in 1851.  At the age of 19 Francis went to Missouri and in 1861 drove an ox-team to Salt Lake City.  On December 10, 1864 he married Isabelle Sidoway, by whom he had eleven children. In May of 1870 he took a second wife, Sarah Carruth; she died in 1883, survived by two of her seven children.  In August 1887 he took a third wife, Maren Jensen, who died in childbirth in 1899.  Armstrong's widow, Isabelle, occupied the house until her death on December 11, 1930.The mansion is one of the finest examples of Queen Anne Style architecture in Salt Lake City.  The Mansion included a beautiful master bedroom, Victorian dining room, library, parlor, and living quarters for house staff. The Mansion was also proudly one of only three homes in all of Salt Lake City to provide indoor-plumbing and running water for its occupants.
  • Located at 943 East South Temple in Salt Lake City, the Walter and Esther Filer House was built in the early 1900x and is now known as Haxton Manner.In 1899 Mr. Filer was associated with the Stanley B. Milner mining enterprises of Salt Lake City, being named manager of the Annie Laurie mines.In Salt Lake City Walter Filer met Miss Esther Browning Freed, daughter of Salt Lake business and civic leaders Charles M. and Louise Block Freed. Walter and Esther were married at St. Mark’s Espicopal Cathedral in Salt Lake on May 25, 1901. After a honeymoon to Chicago and other eastern points, the Filers made their home in Salt Lake City, where Mr. Filer continued his mining interests.The Filers lived in this house for only a short time until moving to New York for a while, where Filer worked with an engineering firm; from there Mr. Filer went to the Phillipines, where he was general manager and overseer for the building of the Phillipine National railroad, working again with Prank Buhl.Another prominent individuals who lived in the home includes Anthony Godbe, president of the Prince Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company and owner of some of the finest apartments in Salt Lake City.
  • Located at 140 North B St in Salt Lake, the Victorian-style Ellerbeck Mansion was built in 1892 for Henrietta Dyer Ellerbeck, the plural wife of Thomas Witton Ellerbeck.Henrietta was born in England in 1842 and immigrated to Utah in 1862. She married Thomas Ellerbeck in July 1862 as his third wife.  Thomas Ellerbeck served as Brigham Young's chief clerk and was involved in nearly all business and industrial developments in the Salt Lake Valley at the time.  Thomas resided at a different home located at 24 East 100 South).Henrietta continued to live in this house until 1903 when she sold it to William F. Armstrong  son of Francis Armstrong (of the Armstrong Mansion), a mayor of Salt Lake City. William became a prominent Salt Lake banker and business man--involved with his father's business, the Salt Lake City electric railroad, in 1908 one of the organizers of the Standard Furniture Company--remaining its president until his death. He married Edith Mogle in 1894 and she continued to live in the house until her own death in 1958.

State Street in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Salt Lake City, this home was built in 1906 and is now operated as the Inn on the Hill. A native of Illinois, Edward Day Woodruff came to Utah in 1890 from Rock Springs, Wyoming where he had been a surgeon for the Union Pacific Railroad.Settling in Salt Lake City, he became very active in civic affairs and entrepreneurial ventures. President of the Brown, Terry, and Woodruff Company that founded the successful Troy Laundry, Mr. Woodruff was a mason and a member of the commercial Club.Mr. Woodruff hired the prestigious architectural firm of Headlund and Wood to build his family's 11,000 square foot home. The second Renaissance Revival style home, one of the grandest homes on Capitol Hill, was completed in 1906.Fashioned after an English manor, the living room walls were covered with leather and canvas hand painted by famous local artist, William Culmer. Decorated in the style of the period, the interior featured the finest craftsmanship of the day as well as Tiffany stained glass and Oriental rugs.
  • Currently operated as the Fifth South location of the Anniversary Inn, this remnant of the old Salt Lake Brewing facility is located at 460 South 1000 East in Salt Lake City.Once one of the largest breweries outside of Milwaukee, the Salt Lake Brewing Company towered over Salt Lake City in the late 1800s with a facility reminiscent of a castle.  This building is the last remnant of that manufacturing facility and was once a Prohibition-era speak-easy that served as headquarters for the infamous James Gang.
