Welcome to Hidden Vallejo
Our new series that highlights those places and ongoing events in the Vallejo area that operate 'under the radar.' While many of these places and happenings are off the beaten path, we think you will be surprised to find that there are a surprising number of them that are easily visible once we know where to look.
Thanks to Myrna Hayes and her devoted team of volunteers, this valuable public resource gets lots of media coverage because of perennially popular events like their holiday-lit trail walks, live music in extraordinary settings and their educational outreach.
But house and outdoor plant buffs may not be aware that the Preserve is holding an informal and ongoing plant sale. We visited the sale this week and were impressed by the variety of plants for sale: groundcover such as lobelia (in two shades of blue/purple), eye-popping cuphea standouts, bromeliads, succulents and a nice assortment of shrubs, herbs and landscape plants in a range of sizes that will inspire the imaginations of both novice and veteran gardeners.
Prices are tiered, depending on the size of the pot and you get even better deals by buying in bulk. After you buy them, plan on repotting or planting them soon as many of them, as is typical for a plant sale, are root-bound. Carefully separate the roots and you will have enough plants for yourself and some to share with your neighbors.
The Preserve is located at 1595 Railroad Ave, Mare Island - Vallejo. It is open Fridays through Sundays, from 10am - Sunset. For more information, call 707-249-9633.
