Hard to believe April 30 is another birthday for the Red-Headed Stranger, Willie Nelson. He was born in 1933 so that would make him, let’s see, carry the 1, okay 81 years old.

From singin in the honky tonks to just kicking back in Hawaii, Nelson has roamed the back roads and found his way into legendary status. He started out in 1962 as the bassist in Ray Price’s band and it was then he wrote “Funny How Time Slips Away” and “Crazy”

He retired in 1972, frustrated with the way his career was going, but it was short lived. He reinvented himself and Shotgun Willie was born. He put out the classic “Red Headed Stranger”, “Stardust” and “Wanted! The Outlaws” with Waylon, Jesse Colter and Tomball Glasser. Soon everybody was listening to Willie and he teamed up with Johnny Cash, Waylon and Kris Kristofferson to form the iconic troupe The Highwaymen.

He has played the blues, jazz and reggae during his career and whether his songs were simple three-chord ballads or kick-ass country stomp, just about anybody with a voice has done a Willie Nelson tune.

He has over the years been a songwriter, singer, activist, writer and actor, but his image will always be cemented in the chiseled face wearing a red bandana and braided locks draped over his shoulders.

Willie is also known for his marijuana busts and most think he still tokes today.

So fire up the bong and let’s celebrate the red-headed gypsy’s birthday today with three bodilicious recipes on the list.

Bhang is an extremely popular marijuana drink in India, especially during the “Holi Festival” in March, where the triumph of “good” over “evil” is celebrated.

Bhang is said to relieve anxiety, boost meditation, and cause transcendental states of mind and spiritual ecstasy.

2 cups water

4 cups warm milk

1/2 to 1 teaspoon rosewater

1oz bud

3/4 to 1 cup sugar

2 tablespoons blanched, chopped almonds

1/8 teaspoon Garam Masala Spice (blend of black pepper, cardamom, caraway seed, clove, cinnamon, bay leaf, coriander, cumin seed and saffron – varies between brands)

1/4 teaspoon ginger powder

Bring the water to a boil in a teapot and remove any stems or seeds from the cannabis, add to the teapot, and cover. Let simmer for approximately 7 minutes.

Strain the water and cannabis through Cheese Cloth and squeeze the wet cannabis to extract as much water as possible. Save this water.

Place the cannabis in a mortar and add 2 tablespoons warm milk. Slowly but firmly grind the milk and cannabis together.

Put the cannabis through Cheese Cloth and squeeze out as much milk as you can. Save this milk.

Repeat this process until you have used 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) of milk. (Save this milk. The cannabis should look pulpy at this point.) Put the cannabis back into the mortar.

Add the chopped almonds and enough warm milk to completely cover the chopped almonds and cannabis.

Grind the mixture in a mortar until a fine paste is formed.

Put this through Cheesecloth and squeeze out as much milk as you can. Save this milk also. (Repeat until dry.)

Throw out the dry mass. Combine all the liquids that have been saved (the water and the milk).

Add garam masala, ginger powder, sugar, rosewater, and remaining milk. Stir.

Chill, serve, and enjoy*.

Blasted Cow

Cracked Ice

1 ½ Oz. Cream

1Oz.Creme de Banana

Dash of Grenadine

1/2 Oz. Cannabis Alcohol Rum Tincture

3 Slices Banana

Grated Nutmeg

Everything except the banana slices and nutmeg go into a shaker and shaken for 30 seconds.

Strain into a glass.

Skewered banana slices and nutmeg added as garnish.

Decorate with a plastic cow and a lit sparkler!

Bud Brownies

1 Egg

1/3 Cup Water

1/3 Cup Vegetable Oil

¼ Oz. High-Grade Marijuana

¼ Cup Walnuts

2 Tbs. Kahlua

1 Pkg. Fudge Brownie Mix

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Remove all stems and seeds from ganja and grind all but 2 Tbs. in a spice grinder.

Pour oil in a saucepan and add grinded marijuana. Bring heat to medium, do not boil and let simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk together. I think the box says to whisk fifty times. If you lose count, fire up another doobie and start over.

Pour brownies into a greased 9x13 baking dish and bake for 30-40 minutes. It is done when a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
