No matter what some people would have you believe horror movies are not sexist, at least not all of them. There was of course the era of exploitation films, but that’s neither here nor there. Horror movies are about safely experiencing and conquering your own fears so in many ways they also serve as platforms of empowerment. The following films contain a range of female-centric subject matters from sexuality, survival, subversion of gender roles, female friendship dynamics, and puberty. These topics function with great volume in the horror genre, but as men are the more inclined to watch horror movies perhaps the true modus operandi here is just to subliminally scare the guys. Look out, boys! The subtext is coming to get you!
