Hall of Fame Class of 2013 announced: see who made it, who didn't

The National Football League has just wrapped up its announcement of the Hall of Fame class of 2013. a maximum of 7 players are inducted into the hall every year, including two senior committee inductees and five modern inductees.

The day began with a list of 15 finalists among the modern players and the two senior committee nominees. This year, the senior committee nominees were former Kansas Chiefs defensive tackle Curly Culp and former Green Bay Packers linebacker Dave Robinson.

The 15 other finalists were Eddie DeBartolo Jr., Art Modell, Kevin Greene, Will Shields, Tim Brown, Michael Strahan, Bill Parcells, Larry Allen, Jerome Bettis, Cris Carter, Charles Haley, Jonathan Ogden, Andre Reed, Warren Sapp, and Aeneas Williams.

  • Warren Sapp was as skilled as he was a loudmouth on the field. Despite playing an interior line position, he still amassed nearly 100 sacks in his 13 seasons. He was named to 7 Pro Bowls in addition to being named to the All-Decade team for both the 1990s and the 2000s. His Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII.
  • Curley Culp was one of the two senior nominees for the class of 2013, and he received enough votes to earn himself a trip to Canton. Culp played from 1968 to 1981, earning six trips to the Pro Bowl. He also won Super Bow IV with the Kansas City Chiefs.
  • An All-Decade player of the 1960s, Dave Robinson was the second of the two senior nominees, and was also successfully voted in. He was the starting left outside linebacker on three straight championship teams, including the Green Bay Packers' victories in Super Bowls I and II. 
  • Perhaps the biggest surprise among those who did not make the final cut was Michael Strahan, who was the defensive captain of the New York Giants team that toppled the then undefeated New England Patriots at the end of the 2007 season. Between 1993 and 2007, Strahan amassed 141.5 sacks, including a single-season record 22.5 in 2001. The seven time Pro Bowler retired following the Giants' win in Super Bowl XLII.
  • Many once thought that Jerome Bettis would have been a first ballot Hall of Famer if he had not retired at the same time as Marshall Faulk and Curtis Martin, two other running backs who are also now Hall of Famers in their own right. With both already enshrined, however, the sixth all time leading rusher missed the cut this season. With 6 Pro Bowls and 3 All-Pro teams to his credit, he is sure to get in, but he must wait. Like Strahan, he retired following his first Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XL.
  • It is difficult for multiple players at the same position to be voted in to the Hall in the same year, and with a log jam of wide receiver talent waiting to get in, they've often cancelled each other out in recent years. This year, it was finally Cris Carter's turn. Is Brown the next receiver in line to make it in?
