Gear up for the Lynchburg Road Runners 2014 Race Series

The Lynchburg Road Runners 2014 Race Series kicks off April 5 with the Point of Honor 5K and Youth Mini-Mile. Many Lynchburg area runners have been warming up for the series with trail runs, group runs and other road races.

There are six runs in the Lynchburg Road Runners 2014 Race Series, offering something for runners of all abilities.

The Lynchburg Road Runners Club promotes fitness in the Lynchburg community through the sport of running. For more than 30 years, the club has celebrated running with races, fun runs and other club events.

Membership in the Lynchburg Road Runners Club is open to families and individuals of all ages. The club is a member of the Road Runners Club of America.

The club holds its monthly meeting September through May at Monte Carlo Italian Restaurant. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by club business or a guest speaker at 7:00 p.m.

Lace up your running shoes and join club members at this year's running events. Running is a great way to stay in shape. The Lynchburg Road Runners Club offers fellowship and encouragement to help you reach your fitness goals.

Point of Honor 5K and Youth Mini-Mile

The Point of Honor 5K and Youth Mini-Mile will be held at 9 a.m. on April 5. The race starts and ends at Jefferson Street near Riverfront Park. The Point of Honor 5K benefits LifeNet Health. April is National Donate Life Month. This race honors 14-year-old Korinne Shroyer, who died in 2002. Korinne's organs were donated to help save the lives of others, including runner Len Geiger. Since then, Geiger and Korinne's parents, Kevin and Kristie, have run together in multiple events.

Spring into Spring 4 Miler

The Spring into Spring 4 Miler will be held at 2 p.m. on May 4 on the Blackwater Creek Bikeway. The course runs through the Hollins Mill tunnel and follows the trail to the Kemper Street Entrance. This event benefits Lynchburg Daily Bread.

Memorial Day 10K Run and 2 Mile Walk

The Memorial Day 10K Run and 2 Mile Walk will be held at 8 a.m. on May 26 on the Blackwater Creek Bikeway near Riverfront Park. Strollers and leashed dogs are permitted in the 2 Mile Walk. This event benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Presbyterian Homes & Family Services 5K and Youth Run

The Presbyterian Homes & Family Services 5K takes place at 8 a.m. on June 21. The 5K begins on the Presbyterian Homes campus at 150 Linden Avenue, winds through Peakland Place and finishes on campus. The Youth Run takes place following the 5K. This event benefits Presbyterian Homes & Family Services.

Percival's Island 5 Miler

The Percival's Island 5 Miler will be held at 8 a.m. on July 19 at Percival's Island. The flat trail runs beside the James River and is partially shaded for a perfect summer race. This event benefits the Lynchburg Road Runners Club.

Lynchburg Half Marathon & 5K

The Lynchburg Half Marathon & 5K is the last event of the Lynchburg Road Runners 2014 Race Series. The event will be held on August 9 at Percival's Island. The half marathon begins at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8 a.m. This event benefits the Lynchburg Road Runners Club.

Families are always welcome at races in Lynchburg. The Gumpman family is seen at many local races. Dad Glenn and mom Cam are often joined by their two daughters when running in Lynchburg. Running is a great way for active families to stay in shape. Lynchburg Road Runner Club offers a discounted membership for families.
