With fall bounty all around, many pet owners start to think about sharing some of the wonderful fruits and vegetables with their pets. This can be an excellent way to supplement your pet's diet with healthy and fresh produce. There are some foods that are more popular with pets than others and there are some precautions you should take even with fresh farm produce unless you grew it yourself.
Start by purchasing locally if at all possible (unless you do have your own garden). Local purchases will save on gas and you can ask about pesticide use and what types of seeds were used. Heirloom species are becoming more popular. In addition, it makes sense to eat seasonal produce. Growing seasons will vary with where you live (even within regions in a state) but you can expect a wide variety of produce throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons. You will need to experiment to find out what foods your pets enjoy.
