Today is Friday the 13th, a date that signifies bad luck, and also a series of low-budget horror films (which totally ripped off John Carpenter's 'Halloween.')
But the unlucky number 13 has also inspired several other horror and suspense films, and for the sake of diversity, here are some non-Jason Voorhees flicks to keep you on the edge of your seats.
I'll be sure note titles that are either available on Netflix Streaming or those that will be airing today on Turner Classic Movies.
4. 'Thirteen Women'
One of the earliest female ensemble films, revolves around a sorority who are frightened when a clairvoyant foresees their deaths. But there's one sorority sister in particular, who may be instigating the carnage herself.
One unlucky real life factoid was the death of Peg Entwistle, whose committed suicide by jumping off the Hollywood sign.
3. '13 Ghosts' (1960)
Okay, so '13 Ghosts' isn't very scary, but sure is a lot of fun. The film was directed by exploitation master William Castle, who created the gimmick Illusion-O, where one could choose to see (or block out) ghosts via a special filtered viewer.
2. 'Assault on Precinct 13' (1976)
Director John Carpenter is known for horror fare like 'Halloween' and 'The Thing.' And while his film 'Assault on Precinct' is billed as an action movie, thanks to it's eerie pacing and ominous score, it's still pretty creepy.
Lieutenant Ethan Bishop (Austin Stoker), must fend off a siege on a local police precinct by gang members seeking revenge against a man holding up at the police station. The gang members never utter a word, making the movie feel somewhat like a zombie film.
1. 'Dementia 13' (1963)
'Dementia 13' was one of Francis Ford Coppola's first directorial efforts. The low budget horror film involves a axe-wielding killer who stalks a family who are being fleeced by a woman capitalizing on the death of her husband to be written into his mother's will.
It's Gothic setting and somber tone make it a step above other cheapie horror films of the era.
So that's our list of four '13' themed films to watch on 'Friday the 13th'. Are there any other titles you'd add to the list that doesn't involved a masked maniac attacking summer camp counselors? Tell us in the comment.
