Forbes: Why the HPV vaccine is a sore spot for parents

In a March 27 Forbes.com piece entitled, 'Merck & Its HPV Vaccine: Sales & Skepticism Are Both Up,' author Ed Silverman asks the question: "Why is HPV vaccination a sore spot?" The reasons he says that parents give are as follows:

  • A belief that the cervical cancer vaccination is unnecessary
  • The vaccination was not recommended by a physician
  • The vaccine is inappropriate for their child’s age
  • There are ongoing concerns over HPV vaccine safety and side effects
  • Some children are not sexually active say their parents

In the same article, it was mentioned that that Norma Erickson of SaneVax, an advocacy group opposed to the vaccines asked, “When will people realize there is a huge difference between ‘increasingly concerned about the safety’ and ‘increasingly aware of the potential risks’? After all, this would not be the first time a prescription medication approved by the FDA as ‘safe and effective’ turned out to be nothing of the sort. Will HPV vaccines be next?”
