Floyd County noteworthy crimes of the week

Fite Howell Casey, 50, of Rome was arrested Saturday by Floyd County Police Officer Day and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, open container, failure to maintain lane and no tag light. Fite made the list because any person driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol to the point where they cannot maintain a lane endangers the lives of themselves and others.Michael Steven Boswell, 34, of Rome was arrested by Rome City Police Officer John Giles and charged with simple battery under the Family Violence Act (FVA), two counts of simple assault under the Family Violence Act (FVA), criminal trespass and an outstanding warrant issued by Floyd County for criminal trespass.Michael Lynn Ayers, 37, of Rome was arrested by Floyd County Police Officer Henry and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and failure to maintain lane. Ayers made the list because any person driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol to the point where they cannot maintain a lane endangers the lives of themselves and others.View the list »
Melvin Brian Atkins, 37, of Rome was arrested by Rome City Police Officer Robinson and charged with driving under the influence, endangering a child by driving under the influence, failure to obey traffic control devices and failure to maintain lane. Oddly enough, the crime of endangering a child by driving under the influence, as horrible as it may be is only a misdemeanor charge in the state of Georgia.

Many of the nominees in this list were included on the basis that their crimes involved innocent children and put them at risk and in harm’s way, either physically or emotionally. The list is derived from the Floyd County Sheriff's daily reports.

  • Nancy Laura Kerns, 53, of Rome was arrested at her home on Drexel Drive by Floyd County Police Officer Joshua Ward and charged with two counts third degree cruelty to children under the Family Violence Act by allowing children to witness an act of family violence, criminal trespass and simple battery under the Family Violence Act (FVA).
  • Tiffany Deanne King, 25, of Rome was arrested at her home on Dellwood Drive by Rome City Police Officer David Tillery on warrants charging her with simple assault under the Family Violence Act, criminal trespass and two counts of third degree cruelty to children by allowing children to witness an act of family violence.
  • Corey Desmond McHenry, 29, of Rome was arrested at his home on Old Dalton Road by Floyd County Police Officer Robinson and charged with battery under the Family Violence Act (FVA) and third degree cruelty to children by allowing children to witness an act of family violence. This is McHenry’s first offense of battery under the Family Violence Act.
  • Jonathan Ryan Norris, 21, of an Antioch Road address in Cedartown was arrested by Floyd County Police Officer Harbin and charged with felony theft by receiving stolen property.  Norris is a repeat offender with an extensive arrest history; the most recent being in November of 2012 when he was arrested in Polk County for theft by taking among other felony charges.
  • Joshua Blake Strickland, 29, of Rome was arrested Saturday by Rome City Police Officer Green and charged with felony terroristic threats and acts, third degree cruelty to children by allowing children to witness an act of family violence, battery and felony probation violation. Reports indicate this is a subsequent arrest for third degree cruelty to children.
  • Terri Catherine Teems, 41, of Kingston was arrested by Floyd County Police Officer Burnes and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and failure to maintain lane while driving. Teems made the list because any person driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol to the point where they cannot maintain a lane endangers the lives of themselves and others.
