Week 8 of the college football season has an unlikely game of the week on Oct. 19. At the least, few expected the Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers to be the first top 5 opponents of the year. But their prime time battle in Death Valley could well be a national semifinal, if the winner takes full advantage.
With the Tigers facing the South Carolina Gamecocks in late November, and the Seminoles taking on the unbeaten Miami Hurricanes and Florida Gators in the coming weeks, these two teams don’t have a cupcake schedule ahead. Nevertheless, the winner of tonight’s game will be favored to go unbeaten the rest of the way, which may or may not give them the inside track to a BCS title shot.
Clemson and Florida State don’t control their own BCS destiny, thanks to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes. The Tigers and Seminoles will still need one, two or all of these programs to lose games -- to say nothing of the LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, UCLA Bruins and Hurricanes. However, those are worries for another day and won’t really concern tonight’s loser.
While the Tigers and Seminoles have the biggest elimination game of the season to date, the rest of the BCS pecking order will still play on. Here is a list of the day’s biggest college football games, which consists of some notable top 25 showdowns other than the one in Death Valley.
