As kids and teens enjoy summer vacation away from textbooks and the classroom, opportunities arise in summer camps to make new friends and explore new ways to explore the world around them. Such is the case with five interesting math and science summer camps in the Jackson, Michigan, area. From overnight camps to day camps, various programs feature robotics, CSI, and various math applications, interspersed with traditional camp activities. This article contains a list featuring five math and science summer camps to inspire youth to continue their learning beyond classroom walls and nourish their minds in new ways. All in all, students learn and build unique projects in safe and creative environments which promote ingenuity and innovation.

I Can Make It Survival Camp

The "I 'CAN' Make It Survival Camp 2013" is sponsored by the Jackson Area Manufacturers Association.  It is a popular overnight camp providing kids in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades a chance to design, build, and test various challenging projects.  In addition they swim and play at the JCISD's Camp McGregor on Crispbell Lake.  They get to learn math and science while having fun and making friends.

The camp for 2013 runs from July 15 - July 19.  It costs $199 for new students.  To learn more, or to see if the camp is running in future years, contact Olivia Firmingham.

Master Shop Rat Roller Coaster Design

Roller coasters capture teenagers attention often due to their speed and unique design.  This day camp meets at Classic Metal Finishing in Jackson, Michigan, from August 12 to August 16, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Students participate in engineering and physics via roller coaster design and operation.  The camp is geared toward 8th to 12th graders and the cost is $125.  To wind up camp on a fun note, a trip to Cedar Point rounds out an interesting week.  More information is available at the Shop Rat website.

Astronomy Research Camp

Astronomy Research Camp

One of Michigan's most high-tech telescopes sits at Camp McGregor in the southwest corner of Jackson County.  It is used during the summer for middle and high school students to study constellations, astrophotography, variable stars, sunspots, and much more.  From June 30 - July 3, 2013, the camp will be offered once again.  The student tuition is $75.  Visit the Jackson CISD site for registration information.

Cougar Food Science Camp

If your student has completed kindergarten through eighth grade, then this summer day camp could be perfect for him or her.  Students will be grouped by grade levels to explore food science on the campus of Spring Arbor University.  This camp eld at the Whiteman-Gibbs Science Center on June 24-28, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Cost is $135. Shop Rat Foundation summer camp

The 2013 Shop Rat introductory summer camp lasts a week and is geared toward students new to the program who are entering grades 6-8.  Some of the projects include making LEGO Mindstorm Robots, electric motor kits, solar energy projects, and much more.  The cost is $75.

Students meet from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., from June 24 - 28, 2013, at the Jackson Area Career Center in Jackson, MI.
