I love the 4th of July, not as much for the spectacular fireworks displays that take place all around northeastern Oklahoma, but for the delicious summertime food. Savory meats on the grill, produce fresh from the garden, and delicious summertime sweets really make me swoon with delight. Here are my five of the best foods to enjoy this 4th of July.
Whether you like it smoky or sweet, barbecue is one of the best foods of the summer. Enjoy delicious barbecued chicken, pork or beef outdoors with your friends, where you can lick the savory sauce right off your fingertips. So good!
Not in the mood for barbecue? You can still put your outdoor cooking skills to good use making one of the classic 4th of July favorites, burgers grilled to perfection. Your neighbors will be drooling with envy unless you throw open your gate and invite them to come on over.
Corn on the cob
Sweet corn on the cob is so good, especially in the summertime when you can get it fresh from the farmers market. Whether you roast it, grill it, or boil it, make sure to prepare a few extra ears for good measure, because it's never more tasty than around the 4th of July.
Home grown tomatoes
I can't say no to home grown tomatoes. They're so much better than what you'd buy in the store, there really is just no comparison. By the 4th of July, fresh tomatoes should be big, juicy and ripened to perfection, so enjoy them while they last.
Homemade ice cream
What's your favorite flavor of homemade ice cream? I'm a little bit partial to peach, because it combines the goodness of vanilla and the sweet, summery flavor of one of my favorite fruits. Of course, plain vanilla is awfully scrumptious, too, especially if someone is good enough to make a homemade cobbler to go with it.
