Actor Bob Hoskins has died at the age of 71. Wife, Linda Hoskins, issued a statement that her husband died Tuesday night at a London hospital, according to Chicago Tribune news reports. The British star had also suffered with a muscular disorder known as Parkinson’s disease, a disease that compelled him to officially retire from his acting career in 2012.
The English actor was best known for his role in the 1990 Hollywood gangster film, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Hoskins appeared in dozens of other British films that garnered notable recognition for a Cannes Award, Best Actor Golden Globe, BAFTA Awards and Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performances in “The Long Good Friday” in 1980 and the “Mona Lisa” movie in 1986.
The “Mermaids” celebrity had starred with “Turn Back Time” singer and actress, Cher and alongside actress, Winona Ryder; the 1990 comedy drama was a film based on a novel written by Patty Dann.
According to the Chicago Tribune, wife Linda Banwell and Hoskins’ four children, released the following statement to the public, “"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob. Bob died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family, following a bout of pneumonia.
"We ask that you respect our privacy during this time and thank you for your messages of love and support."
The 1996 “Rainbow” movie director also took helm directing in “The Raggedy Rawney” film in 1988; two films that he also took part in performance roles. His 2009, his last known television role, “The Street,” earned him his first Emmy in 2010,winning Best Actor at the International Emmys; Hoskins announced his official retirement in August 2012 shortly after being newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2011.
Bob Hoskins is survived by his four children, 46-year-old son, Alex Hoskins, 42-year-old daughter, Sarah Hoskins from his first wife with Jane Livesey until their divorce in 1978 and 31-year-old daughter, Rosa Hoskins and 28-year-old son, Jack Hoskins with his current wife, Linda Banwell; Hoskins and Banwell have been married for over three decades until his death.
