Fall is almost here, and apples are a mainstay for lots of creative recipes that are kid-friendly and classroom-friendly for teachers who want to add a cooking experience to a lesson about apples and to extend children's interest in reading. Books about apples are in plentiful supply, and children will enjoy creating and preparing recipes with apples after reading a favorite book about apples.
The Culinary Academy in Sarasota is now enrolling for fall classes for ages 3-6 that will incorporate stories and creative recipes. Chef instructors will help your little ones prepare a recipe after reading the chosen book for the class. Storybook Cooks classes will use puppets and hands-on activities with a recipe that is based on a favorite children's book. Tasting and cooking experiences are part of these classes. The Storybook Cooks classes are limited to 12 participants, and will be offered from 5:00-6:00 p.m. each Wednesday. Menus are available for the Storybook Cooks on the website at www.culinarykidsflorida.com. The cost for Storybook Cooks is $65. Enrollment for fall and winter is now available. Parents may also want to add reading and preparing a kid-friendly recipe to family time at home.

*8 medium quartered apples, unpeeled, but cored
*1 cup sugar
*1 cup apple juice
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
Directions: In a 2 qt. glass casserole, combine apples and juice. Microwave on high 9-10 minutes stirring every 3 minutes until apples are soft. remove skin, transfer to blender for smoothing. Return to casserole. Combine with sugar, cinnamon, pic spice, and cloves. Microwave on high 10-12 minutes until mix thickens. Store in freezer or refrigerator in sterilized jars. This recipe makes 1 quart.
