0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are the ten numbers that make up every other number! Four is the fourth number and it is also one of the most prominent. Four is an even number that has a lot of significance in the numeral system. Four is associated with words like quartet and foursome. Squares and rectangles are both shapes that have four sides and even the word “four” has four letters! In the English language there is no other number that has the same amount of letters as its value. Hence, four is especially unique.

There are many things that are arranged in groups of four. There are four phases of the moon and four leaves on a clover. Four also has distinction in the animal and insect kingdom. Bees have four wings and many animals have four legs. Some fish and turtles even have four eyes! Four can also be an important number in games. A deck of cards contains four suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. Many board games can be played with a maximum of four players.

Generally, there are four directions on a map: North, South, East and West. Thus, all compasses have four points that represent these directions. Although some directions require two directions (such as “North East”), the basic four components are as listed.

There are four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Throughout history the four seasons have provided ample inspiration for many artists and writers and that makes this “set of four” one of the most iconic.

"Tetra" Means Four

“Tetra” means four. A tetragram is a word with four letters, such as the word “four” itself. Furthermore, a tetradite is someone who attaches mystical properties to the number four. “Quad” also means four. A quadruped is a four-footed animal like a cat or a dog.

In a single molecule of DNA just four bases are used to create the genetic code which determines the distinctive and unique form of every plant and animal. The four bases are called thymine, adenosine, guanine and cytosine, or just T, A, G and C.

The term “four dimensional” describes something that has an extra dimension alongside length, width and depth. In mathematics, four-dimensional refers to an imaginary fourth dimension in space called a “hypercube.”
