2nd Street Market focuses on the environment! The 2nd Street Market is currently running a Reuse to Reduce campaign. The Market was awarded a grant from the Montgomery County Solid Waste District to encourage their customers to reuse a bag to reduce the Market’s waste to the waste stream. Did you know that in the United States alone, over 100 billion plastic shopping bags are used annually? To help reduce the waste, the Market is offering the chance to win several prizes, including a top prize of $125 in Market Money! For a chance to win :
- Use any reusable bag when shopping the 2nd Street Market.
- Enter a drawing by filling out a ticket after making a purchase at any vendor booth
- Drop your ticket into the recyclable boxes stationed at each vendor booth.
In September, The 2nd Street Market will be drawing three winners EACH Saturday. 1st prize is $125 in Market Money, 2nd prize is $50 in Market Money and 3rd prize is $25 in Market Money. The promotion ends Saturday, September 28th
‘I Shop D8N” Market Bag’ – the 2nd Street Market is making the Reuse to Reduce promotion even easier for you, with the creation of their special, limited time only ‘I Shop D8N’ reusable bag! Made of 100% recycled water bottles and made in the U.S.A. (how cool is that?) the bags will be distributed by the Five Rivers MetroParks Master Recycler volunteers every Saturday in September! All they ask is that you take the pledge to reuse to reduce. You can go here to learn more about the Market going green.
More reasons to shop the Market:
On Thursday, Sep 5 from 10 to 11 a.m., Azra from Azra’s Mediterranean Cuisine will be showcasing some of the wonderful foods and traditions from the Mediterranean, and sharing delicious samples! Parents and children 10 years and up will enjoy this informative and fun program. This program is being presented before the Market is open, so participants are request to use the Pavilion entrance, located on the east end of the market, near the B&O Train car in the parking lot. When the Market opens at 11 a.m., participants will be ready to check out the rest of the Market!
Another wonderful opportunity for Market-goers is the demonstration on Thursday, Sep 12 by Living Simply Soap. Between 11 a.m. and noon, Living Simply Soap will be demonstrating the handmade soap-making process from beginning to end! Program attendees will leave with a general understanding of the origin of soap making, the basic chemistry involved and the value and sustainability of the product. Everyone will leave with more confidence in their own ability in making their own soap at home.
