Apples are low in calories, contain no saturated fats or cholesterol and are a great source of dietary fiber. The fiber in apples helps to prevent the absorption of LDL ('bad') cholesterol and helps to protect the colon by binding any cancer-causing chemicals inside the colon.
Apples are loaded with antioxidants known as flavonoids and polyphenolics which help protect the body from the negative effects of free radicals. Apples contain lots of vitamin C and beta-carotene, both of which help your body resist attacks from infectious entities and assist in protecting you from those inflammatory free radicals. Apples have several B-complex vitamins and even a little calcium, potassium and phosphorus.
This apple crisp recipe is very quick and easy and you probably have all the ingredients just sitting around your kitchen doing nothing; if not, Liberty Market has everything you see in this recipe except for the butter…and everything at Liberty Market is organic!
Easy apple crisp
- 4 medium apples, peeled and cut into chunks* (about 4 cups)
- ¾ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup quick oooking or old fashioned oats
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Heat the over to 375 degrees. Butter the bottom and sides of an 8” square pan. Spread the apples in the pan. Mix the rest of the ingredients together in a separate bowl (you may need a pastry cutter to get the butter mixed in well) and then sprinkle all that over the apples.
Bake for about 30 minutes or until the apples are tender when stuck with a fork.
Really good with whipped cream or ice cream on top!
^or not. Most of the vitamins are in the peels! I compromise by leaving little bits of the peel on the apples.
