Week 1 of the college football season revolved around the Georgia Bulldogs, Clemson Tigers and Johnny Manziel. Aside from that, the top 25 action on Aug. 31 seemed destined to have little but blowouts over overmatched opponents. Although there were plenty of those games, there were some other developments mixed in too -- like the latest FCS team to knock off a top FBS opponent.
Although the North Dakota State Bison shocked the Kansas State Wildcats on Aug. 30, the Wildcats weren’t a top 25 team. On the other hand, the Oregon State Beavers were No. 25 in the nation, before getting upset at home by 49-46 to the Eastern Washington Eagles on Aug. 31.
North Dakota State and Eastern Washington are among the elite in the FCS, so it isn’t like the Wildcats and Beavers lost to totally inferior opponents. However, the Beavers weren’t supposed to lose either way, given their hopes to be a sleeper in the Pac-12. Yet Oregon State’s defense went to sleep in giving up 625 total yards, as well as a game winning touchdown with 23 seconds left.
The Beavers were one of only two top 25 teams to lose to an unranked opponent in Week 1, although this was much more embarrassing. Here is a list of the most noteworthy games with top 25 teams in Week 1 -- other than the ones in College Station, Cornwallis and Death Valley.
