The Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns have been trying to decide their starting quarterbacks all preseason. However, the Eagles and Browns did have clear cut favorites the whole way through. They finally made it official on Aug. 20, as Michael Vick remained the top choice in Philadelphia while Brandon Weeden got another chance in Cleveland.
The Eagles built up a roster with five quarterbacks, although Vick and Nick Foles quickly kept their place as No. 1 and No. 2. Given new coach Chip Kelly’s slow pace in choosing between them, it looked like Philadelphia would wait until the end of the preseason to pick an opening night starter. Instead, Vick was declared the winner days before the Eagles’ third preseason game with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 24.
While Vick and Foles were both efficient in their first two games, Vick had the edge since he was the favorite from the start and did nothing to discredit it. As for the Browns, Weeden was also favored to beat out veteran Jason Campbell, in spite of some growing pains in his first season.
Vick is down to his last chance in the NFL, while Weeden still has time to develop into a star. Philadelphia and Cleveland both hope that their struggles to keep their jobs will make them tougher and ready to win in the regular season. If they’re wrong, then both the Eagles and Browns will stay in the NFL basement.
Although the Eagles and Browns were consumed by their quarterback races thus far, they were far from the only ones. Here is a list of all the other quarterback competitions in the NFL preseason so far, with not all of them having been decided yet.
