Dog helps hounds in need with paw-painted artwork

It’s almost time, once again, for Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue’s famous (or infamous!) Boardwaddle in Ocean City, N.J. Every year there’s a Boardwaddle to help the hounds in need and every year there’s a commemorative tee shirt. But this year, the commemorative tee shirt is very special indeed. The artwork on the shirt is paw-painted by Flash the Wonder Dog!

Flash the Wonder Dog was rescued by Tri-State last summer after being cruelly shot by his owner in Kentucky. Flash ended up with one leg amputated and another badly damaged. Lucky for Flash, though, he fostered with Tri-State’s Sue Mason. She fell in love with him and quickly added him to her pack. Sue thought Flash’s loving, happy personality might just endear him to paw painting. It did!

Flash loves to paint. While most dogs just walk around on the paper, Flash sits down a lot. He wags his tail and his damaged paw gets pulled through the paint. This creates “brush strokes,” which are unique to Flash’s painting. Listen to Sue tell you about Flash’s painting technique.

I place a piece of 140# handmade watercolor paper on the floor and surround it with newspaper in a lame attempt to contain the mess. Then Flash walks/slides his butt/sits on the paper while I periodically lift his good front paw up and apply the paint to it. (I keep the creative juices flowing with bologna as he’s prone to naps). I never direct the painting and only chose the paint colors. When I feel there is enough pattern on the paper and before it starts to look muddy, I remove the paper to dry. Once the paper is dry it’s up to me to find a suitable Basset silhouette in the paint pattern and cut it out. It’s amazing but Bassets seem to leap off the paper. I never do anything to enhance the image – Flash is the artist."

You can get your very own Flash the Wonder Dog artwork in this year’s Boardwaddle shirt design. The shirts come in shades of green, yellow, pink and blue on a stonewashed dark purple shirt. The cheerful colors pop against the purple shirt and you can really see those paw print/brush strokes. This is the first ever tee shirt painted by a three-legged Basset Hound and is sure to become a collector’s item!

The shirts are available, as follows:

Flash's Technique

Flash the Wonder Dog demonstrates his painting technique. Because of Flash's legs, he tends to sit down more than classic paw painters. When he drags his bad leg and butt over the "canvas," he creates "brush strokes" that are unique to Flash's work.
