Most people can find some activity that they do not want to do at first. The very fact the activity is terribly disliked, and it keeps them from doing it. It could be something that will contribute greatly to their well being and even help others. The action could even save someone else’s life. Why not go ahead and do it? Initially, it could cause pain either physically or emotionally. The selfish and self-centeredness would be grossly neglected. There would be no or hardly any accolades or applause. A complete selfless act would mean self-denial. Self denial puts others first.
The Holy Bible states that Jesus is the example of self-denial. He did not come to be applauded or even accepted in the religious circles. He came to fulfill His mission for God, the Father. He came to give up His life for others. The Scripture states,
“But made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!”(Philippians 2:7-8)
Jesus gave the same instructions to believers in Him. “Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”(Luke 9:23) What was Jesus saying? His followers or disciples must die to selfishness and self-centeredness on a daily basis. Wow! Is that even possible? With God all things are possible especially to those who believe.
Challenge: Believer, take up your cross and deny yourself! Trust the Holy Spirit’s leading to serve and follow Jesus!
